Naomi Osaka vs Jennifer Brady Preview & Predictions

Osaka is a flawless 3-0 in Grand Slam finals and I think she extends that perfect record when she comes up against first-time major finalist Brady for the Australian Open title on Saturday night.

Having well and truly adapted to life in the spotlight, Osaka brings an incredible 20-match winning streak into the final. That run includes the Japanese-Haitian star capturing her third major crown at last year’s US Open – where she defeated Brady in the semi-finals.

Osaka has dropped just one set en route to her second Australian Open final – and that was against the in-form Garbine Muguruza in the fourth round, with many believing that should have been the final.

Since then, Osaka has steamrolled past Hsieh Su-wei and Serena Williams in comfortable straight sets – two players she’s struggled with in the past, which further illustrates just how well she’s playing at the moment.

Meanwhile, Brady has proven she’s here to stay at the top of the game after a breakout 2020 in which she reinvented her game with superior fitness and movement to go with her already explosive serve and forehand.

However, there are signs that Brady has been running out of steam towards the business end of this tournament – both mentally and physically.

The American didn’t drop a set until the quarter-finals, but it must be said she had a very easy draw. Brady then survived tough three-setter against Jessica Pegula and Karolina Muchova, admitting after her semi-final win that she was extremely nervous and felt flat until the start of the third set.

Those nerves will only intensify in a first Grand Slam final – and with Osaka in the type of form she’s in, this could be over in a hurry.

Osaka is unbeaten in major finals, has won 10 of her last 16 matches in straight sets and has barely had her serve broken in her recent matches. Throw in her experience in slam finals and Brady’s gradual decline as this tournament has gone on and I’m predicting a one-sided victory for Osaka and a fourth Grand Slam title.
