Felix Auger-Aliassime vs Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Tips, Prediction & Preview

An entertaining contest awaits in the second round of the Australian Open on Thursday when top 10 star Felix Auger-Aliassime resumes his rivalry with Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

Auger-Aliassime is a year younger than his Spanish opponent, but he’s come on leaps and bounds over the last couple of seasons and is currently ranked No. 9 in the world.

The 21-year-old made his mark towards the end of last year when he advanced to his first Grand Slam semi-final at the US Open before going down to eventual champion Daniil Medvedev.

The Canadian has made a solid start to 2022, beating the likes of Alexander Zverev and Roberto Bautista Agut in the ATP Cup, but he was somewhat fortunate to survive Emil Ruusuvuori in the first round of the Australian Open on Tuesday, coming back from two sets to one down to prevail in five.

We could be in for another long match on Thursday, with Davidovich certainly no stranger to marathon encounters.

The Spaniard is ranked No. 50 in the world but is to rise much higher in 2022 if he can stay injury free and improve his consistency from week to week.

Davidovich Fokina made the fourth round of the US Open in 2020 before reaching the quarter-finals of Roland Garros last season, taking the scalp of Casper Ruud along the way. The 22-year-old lost first round of Sydney to begin 2022, but scored a good straight sets victory over Aussie Alex Bolt to launch his campaign in Melbourne.

Auger-Aliassime is the favourite, but the Canadian has a tendency to go walkabout in some slam matches, while Davidovich Fokina has the flair and shotmaking skills to make this an interesting contest. All of their sets at junior and challenger level have been close, but Auger-Aliassime has prevailed each time. We expect the same sort of clash in Melbourne.
