Garbine Muguruza to beat Sofia Kenin in straight sets
Muguruza is back to the unstoppable form that saw her win two slams and hit the No. 1 ranking a few years ago – and I think she’s set for a third major against Kenin. Muguruza has beaten three top 10 players without losing a set this tournament and has the power to blow Kenin off the court. The American’s average rank of opponents before beating No. 1 Barty (who played her worst match in a year) was No. 95 and her serve is waiting to be attacked. Muguruza should win this comfortably.
Sunday February 2
Novak Djokovic vs Dominic Thiem
Djokovic has never lost an Australian Open final and I don’t think he’s going to start now. A flawless 7-0 when reaching the title match in Melbourne, Djokovic comes into this year’s final on the back of a 12-0 record for 2020 that has seen him beat Daniil Medvedev, Rafael Nadal, Milos Raonic and Roger Federer. He’s playing as good as he’s ever done in Melbourne and he always goes to another gear in the final.
Thiem, as well as he’s played, has been on court for six hours longer than Djokovic this tournament and that’s not what you want when you’re facing the best defensive player in the world. Thiem needs the first set to make this competitive, but Djokovic knows that. If the Serbian wins the opener, I fear this could be a one-sided final.
