Aiming to become the first local woman to win the Australian Open since 1978, Barty has put together a superb start to the season and this tournament.

Barty has won all six matches she’s contested in 2021, which is hugely impressive considering she hadn’t played in 12 months before last week. The 24-year-old defeated Garbine Muguruza to win a lead-in tournament last week and has continued her fine form at the Australian Open, crushing Danka Kovinic 6-0 6-0 before edging out countrywoman Daria Gavrilova in a second-set tiebreak on Thursday.

It wasn’t the cleanest tennis Barty has produced and I can see this third round match with the in-form Alexandrova turning into a big battle.

Alexandrova is in sensational form herself, defeating Simona Halep last week and advancing into the Australian Open third round without relinquishing a set. The Russian has powerful groundstrokes off both wings and the firepower to make Barty uncomfortable.

The question is, can Alexandrova sustain a high level for the entire match? I have my doubts. Barty’s court craft and variety should ensure Alexandrova never settles into a comfort zone, so while she may be able make life hard for Barty at various stages, the World No. 1 will likely have enough guile to outlast the Russian in the end.
