World No. 1 Ash Barty looks to cap a phenomenal Australian Open campaign by winning her third Grand Slam title when she meets American firebrand Danielle Collins in the final on Saturday night.

Barty’s comeback to professional tennis has been one of sport’s all-time greatest stories, with the Aussie picking up French Open and Wimbledon titles over the last few years, along with rising to World No. 1, where she has remained for the last 110 weeks.

Playing her first tournament since the US Open in September last year, Barty launched 2022 by claiming another WTA title in Adelaide before turning her attention to the Australian Open, where she has produced a near-perfect performance over the last fortnight.

Indeed, Barty has raced into the final without dropping a set, losing just 21 games in six matches (the third most efficient run to an AO final) and spending just six hours and six minutes on court. It doesn’t get much more dominant than that, with Barty crushing Americans Jessica Pegula 6-2 6-0 and Madison Keys 6-1 6-3 in the quarter and semi-finals.

It’s been a masterclass from Barty, but can she handle the pressure once more to become the first local to win the Australian Open women’s singles title since Chris O’Neil in 1978?

Collins could be a tough nut to crack. The American is the 27th seed but is undoubtedly playing like a top five player at the moment, producing some spectacular tennis to crush Alize Cornet and Iga Swiatek in straight sets in her last two matches.

Collins was on fire in her semi-final against Swiatek, cracking 27 winners to just 13 unforced errors for her seventh top 10 career victory. The 28-year-old absolutely loves the conditions in Australia, with six of her seven top 10 scalps coming in the country, with three occurring at the Australian Open.

Striving to become the first college player to win a Grand Slam singles title – man or woman – Collins is certainly in with a chance despite Barty’s irresistible form, with the American winning 29 of her last 35 matches since July.

Having beaten Barty in their last meeting and twice taking a set in two more defeats, Collins is clearly capable of making this a more than competitive final if she maintains her current level and Barty perhaps starts feeling the pressure.

Overall, Barty’s current form and immense variety with her slice means we can’t go past her to win the title, but don’t be surprised if Collins starts with a bang and turns this into a final to remember.
