Ashleigh Barty vs Daria Gavrilova Tips & Predictions

After delivering an intimidating statement in her dominant opening round win, Barty will be determined to keep her momentum rolling when she takes on compatriot and good friend Gavrilova in the second round on Thursday.

Barty was unstoppable in her first round on Tuesday, absolutely obliterating Danka Kovinic 6-0 6-0 in just 44 minutes. The World No. 1 won the first 16 points to sprint through the opening set in 16 minutes and kept her foot on the pedal in the second to complete the victory, conceding just 10 points for the entire contest.

That performance followed Barty’s official return to action for the first time in a year last week, where she won the Yarra Valley Classic title with a straight sets dispatch of last year’s Australian Open runner-up Garbine Muguruza.

All of that spells danger signs for Gavrilova, who continues to make her comeback from various injury issues over the last couple of seasons.

Gavrilova produced her best display since returning to the tour in her first round, accounting for the tough Sara Sorribes Tormo in straight sets. However, this – needless to say – is a significant step up in class.

Barty has the perfect balance between power, court craft and variety and is playing with immense confidence right now. She will likely have answers for everything Gavrilova throws at her, which should see the top seed into the third round with minimal fuss.
