Ash Barty vs Camila Giorgi Tips, Prediction & Preview

It’s been a rampant start to Ash Barty’s campaign at the Australian Open and the top seed looks to continue her magnificent form when she meets the dangerous Camila Giorgi for a place in the fourth round on Friday.

Barty has been incredibly dominant across her first two rounds in Melbourne, crushing Legia Tsurenko 6-0 6-1 and Lucia Bronzetti 6-1 6-1, with both matches lasting under an hour.

The World No. 1 has picked up from where she left off last season, beginning the season with a WTA title in Adelaide, where she eased past Elena Rybakina in the final and also defeated the likes of Iga Swiatek, Sofia Kenin and Coco Gauff along the way.

After picking up the Wimbledon and French Open titles, Barty’s primary focus is success at her home slam and she’s playing better than ever coming into this encounter.

However, Barty will have be on her guard, because Giorgi is arguably the biggest ball striker in women’s tennis and has the ability to seize control of matches if her shotmaking is firing.

Giorgi’s enormous inconsistency is the reason she’s never been ranked highly at the top of the game for an extended period of time, but the Italian remains an ever-present dangerous floater in every tournament she enters – and she even won a big event in 2021 at the Canadian Open, defeating Karolina Pliskova in the final.

Giorgi has defeated 13 top 10 players throughout her career and has won her opening two matches in Melbourne in straight sets over Anastasia Potapova and Tereza Martincova. She’s in good form, confident and not at all intimidated by playing the World No. 1 in her own backyard.

In fact, Giorgi has already played Barty at this stage of the Australian Open before, taking the opening set in that 2018 clash before fading away in three. Barty has been in cruise control and that could be detrimental if Giorgi manages to hang with the top seed in the first set.

There’s no value in backing Barty to dominate this match, but there’s a good chance Giorgi makes a real contest of this. Backing the Italian to cover the 6.5 games handicap and for Barty to edge it in three looks the value here.
