Matteo Berrettini vs Gael Monfils Prediction & Preview

An unmissable quarter-final awaits at the Australian Open on Tuesday as top 10 star Matteo Berrettini takes on mercurial showman Gael Monfils.

Berrettini and Monfils have played twice before, with the Italian emerging triumphant on both occasions – including a five-set epic at the 2019 US Open quarter-finals, which was heralded by many as one of the best matches of the last few years.

Ranked No. 7 in the world after making the Wimbledon final last year, Berrettini finished 2021 on a sour note as he was forced to withdraw from the ATP Finals in front of his home fans in Turin with injury.

Berrettini started 2022 off a little rusty as he lost to Alex de Minaur and Daniil Medvedev at the ATP Cup and dropped sets against Brandon Nakashima, Stefan Kozlov and Carlos Alcaraz in his first three rounds at the Australian Open, but he saved his best tennis for a fourth round showdown with Pablo Carreno Busta on Sunday night.

In what was an incredible serving masterclass, Berrettini fired down 28 aces in just three sets of tennis. The Italian out 77 per cent of first serves into play and won 87 per cent of those points. If Berrettini posts those numbers again, he takes the racquet out of your hands and is virtually unplayable, especially when his forehand his firing.

All up, Berrettini struck 57 winners to just 27 unforced errors, so Monfils will need to pray the seventh seed cools down a bit if he wants to make his first semi-final at Melbourne Park.

Monfils’ form is also intimidating – the resurgent Frenchman is playing some of his best tennis at the age of 35. He’s stepping up into the court and being aggressive instead of counterpunching from the baseline and his being rewarded, with Monfils not dropping a set in a completed match all season.

Indeed, Monfils started the year with a title in Adelaide and has cruised into the Australian Open quarter-finals for the first time since 2016 with straight sets victories over Federico Coria, Alexander Bublik, Cristian Garin and Miomir Kecmanovic.

However, he faces a massive step up in class against Berrettini, especially if the Italian reproduces the level he did against Carreno Busta.

Monfils has a decent record against big servers and leads his H2Hs with the likes of John Isner and Ivo Karlovic, while he’s 3-3 with Milos Raonic, so if he can return well, he should be able to make this match competitive. However, as mentioned, if Berrettini performs like he did in the previous round, the Italian will be very hard to stop and will likely extend his record over Monfils to 3-0 and make his first Australian Open quarter-final.
