Alex de Minaur vs Lorenzo Musetti Tips, Prediction & Preview

Is this the year Alex de Minaur goes on a deep run at his home slam? The Aussie will have to navigate his way past the rising Lorenzo Musetti in order to survive the first round on Tuesday night.

De Minaur has never been past the third round of the Australian Open, losing out to Rafael Nadal in 2019, missing the 2020 tournament through injury and going down to Fabio Fognini 12 months ago.

Despite winning two ATP 250 titles last season, it was a tough year for de Minaur, with the 22-year-old catching Covid-19 midway through the campaign and he never really recovered from there, losing 11 of his last 16 matches.

However, de Minaur looked good to begin 2022 in Sydney at the ATP Cup, registering two solid wins over Matteo Berrettini and Ugo Humbert.

De Minaur made the smart decision to take last week off in order to come into the Australian Open fresh – something he hasn’t done over the last few years. Will it pay dividends this time?

Musetti had a similar season trajectory to the Australian in that his second half of the season was woeful, with the young Italian losing 16 of his last 22 matches.

The 19-year-old’s highlight came at the French Open where he advanced to the fourth round and led World No. 1 Novak Djokovic by two sets to love before being forced to retire in the fifth set due to cramping.

That match alone showcased the immense talent Musetti has at his disposal, and once he becomes accustomed to life on tour and grows into his body, he will undoubtedly be a forced to be reckoned with.

But can he make an impact right here and now in Melbourne? Look, it’s certainly possible, even if Musetti isn’t entirely at home on a hardcourt yet. De Minaur will get everything back, but the Aussie is susceptible to being overpowered by big shotmaking, so if Musetti finds his range, this could turn into a very interesting match.

You can’t go against de Minaur when you look at recent form, but don’t be surprised if Musetti makes a real match of this under the bright lights of MCA.
