Simona Halep vs Veronika Kudermetova Tips & Predictions
Halep survived an almighty scare in her second round and will be hoping for a more straightforward clash when she faces 32nd seed Kudermetova for a spot in the second week on Friday night.
After cruising past Lizette Cabrera for the loss of just three games in the opening round, Halep was pushed all the way by another Australian in Ajla Tomljanovic on Wednesday, dropping the opening set before trailing 5-2 in the decider. However, the Romanian showcased all her fighting spirit and used her experience to reel off five straight games to emerge triumphant 7-5 in the third.
I think this match will battle harden Halep – she hasn’t faced a challenge like that for many months and she will be stronger for it. Halep is a player who gets better with more matches under her belt, so surviving that encounter is very promising for her going forward.
Meanwhile, Kudermetova has put together a very solid last couple of seasons, rising into the top 40 and coming into this tournament on the back of reaching the Abu Dhabi final in January.
However, I’m not liking her chances here. Kudermetova had an injury-time out for a leg issue in her second round win over Gracheva and the last thing you want is hampered movement when facing a player like Halep.
As mentioned, Halep should be stronger after surviving Tomljanovic and I think she will win this clash fairly convincingly.
