Nick Kyrgios & Thanasi Kokkinakis vs Matt Ebden & Max Purcell Prediction & Preview

It’s been 42 years since four Aussies have squared off in the Australian Open men’s doubles title as Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis clash with Matt Ebden and Max Purcell on Saturday night.

Kyrgios and Kokkinakis have single-handedly made the doubles event a must-watch at this Australian Open, putting on thoroughly entertaining spectacles over the last week, firstly on Kia Arena in front of rapturous support and also in the semi-finals on Rod Laver Arena on Thursday.

Kyrgios and Kokkinakis – the ‘Special Ks’ – have knocked out the No. 1 seeds in Nikola Metic and Mate Pavic, along with the 15th seeds Ariel Behar and Gonzalo Escobar, sixth seeds Tim Puetz and Michael Venus and third seeds Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos to reach their first major doubles final.

While not a traditional doubles pairing, Kyrgios and Kokkinakis are proving you can have success by going down the unconventional route. Of course, being blessed with the immense natural talent they both have also helps. Kyrgios’ massive serve is an enormous weapon, while Kokkinakis’ prowess from the baseline and his ability to cool down his mate means they compliment each other perfectly on court.

Meanwhile, Ebden and Purcell have flown under the radar all tournament, but have been just as impressive as their compatriots, conquering fourth seeds Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah, 13th seeds Raven Klaasen and Ben McLachlan, 10th seeds Wesley Koolhof and Neil Skupski and second seeds Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury to reach the final.

Ebden and Purcell had experience of going relatively deep in a slam before this tournament, reaching the quarter-finals of the 2021 US Open before going down to Ram and Salisbury after having four match points.

Purcell in particular has been a sensational doubles player so far in his young career, also making the Australian Open men’s doubles final with Luke Saville in 2020. While he will turn his attention to singles for the remainder of 2022 and beyond, Purcell could be the player that makes the difference in the final.

Doubles can be a lottery on occasion, which makes the price of $1.44 for Kyrgios and Kokkinakis look far too short. Purcell and Ebden are a fantastic team, are effective at net and have been just as impressive over the last week. They are the value pairing from a betting point of view as Australia prepares to crown its first all-Aussie men’s doubles champions at the AO since 1997.
