Daniil Medvedev vs Botic Van De Zandschulp Tips, Prediction & Preview

Daniil Medvedev targets the fourth round of the Australian Open when he meets Botic Van De Zandschulp for the second straight major on Saturday.

Medvedev defeated the Dutchman in the quarter-finals of the US Open last year before going on to crush Felix Auger-Aliassime and Novak Djokovic to pick up his maiden Grand Slam title.

The World No. 2 has an excellent chance to win his second major at the Australian Open and rise to World No. 1 due to Djokovic’s absence this tournament.

Medvedev was tasked with a tricky second round draw against Nick Kyrgios, but he played an absolutely outstanding match, firing down a staggering 31 aces and striking 68 winners to just 29 unforced errors to prevail in four sets in a remarkably clean performance.

Medvedev, who is known to rile up a crowd, kept his emotions in check throughout, but then let the audience on Rod Laver Arena know his feelings in the post-match interview with Jim Courier.

Not shy to play the villain, Medvedev will relish any booing that might come his way heading into this third round showdown.

Meanwhile, Van De Zandschulp has experienced a fantastic rise to be on the cusp of the world’s top 50 over the last year, with the Dutchman climbing almost 100 spots in the rankings from midway through 2021 up to this tournament.

The primary reason for that huge rankings rise was Van De Zandschulp’s incredible run at the US Open, where he came from a set down in every match from qualifying and throughout the first three rounds of the main draw to reach the quarter-finals, defeating the likes of top 15 players Diego Schwartzman and Casper Ruud along the way.

Van De Zandschulp backed it up with a semi-final appearance in St. Petersburg towards the end of the season, while he has made his way through to the third round of the Australian Open for the first time with a straight sets win over Jan Lennard-Struff and Richard Gasquet retirement.

However, this is where his runs comes to an end. Medvedev is almost unbeatable right now and an on-fire Nick Kyrgios was a bit lucky to even take a set. Van De Zandschulp doesn’t have that firepower, so expect Medvedev to get everything back and come away with a straight sets victory.
