Garbine Muguruza vs Alize Cornet Tips, Prediction & Preview

Garbine Muguruza continues her pursuit of a first Australian Open title when she squares off against Alize Cornet in the second round on Thursday.

Muguruza has tasted Grand Slam glory on the clay of Roland Garros and grass of Wimbledon, but is yet to go all the way on hardcourt – but she did make the final of the Australian Open back in 2020, falling to Sofia Kenin.

The Spaniard has got back to her best form over the last year or so and finished 2021 on the highest of highs by winning the WTA Finals title, which she is hoping acts as a springboard for early 2022 success.

Muguruza didn’t have the best preparation for Melbourne Park, withdrawing from Adelaide and going down to Daria Kasatkina in the Sydney quarter-finals, but she looked solid in a 6-3 6-4 win over Clara Burel in her opening round on Tuesday, hitting 22 winners to 20 unforced errors.

Meanwhile, Cornet didn’t have a great season in 2021 and has slipped to No. 61 in the world. In fact, her best result was when she defeated Muguruza en route to the Berlin semi-finals, where she was stopped by Belinda Bencic.

It’s easy to forget how long Cornet has been playing at the top of the game, with the 31-year-old playing her first Australian Open main draw all the way back in 2006. However, the Frenchwoman has only been past Round 2 once since 2015 and it likely won’t happen again in 2022.

This could be the perfect match for Muguruza to really kick-start her season – Cornet has to be respected, but the Spaniard has the power and weight of shot to control proceedings and really play the match on her own terms. We’re backing Muguruza to get into a groove and come away with the win in straights.
