Rafael Nadal vs Matteo Berrettini Tips, Prediction & Preview
On the cusp of history, Rafael Nadal aims to return to the Australian Open final when he comes up against a confident Matteo Berrettini on Friday afternoon.
Nobody expected Nadal to be the player that would get to a record 21 majors first, but the Spaniard has an outstanding opportunity to leapfrog Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer in Melbourne over the next few days.
Nadal hasn’t performed his best at the Australian Open over the last few years, but things have gone his way in 2022, with his draw opening up nicely as he avoided the likes of Alexander Zverev and Hubert Hurkacz, along Djokovic missing from this semi-final showdown.
In saying that, Nadal still hasn’t been very impressive – the 2009 champion dropped a set against Karen Khachanov, who has been quite poor for a while now, while he was struggling considerably in a five-set win over Denis Shapovalov in the quarter-finals.
That quarter-final was a fairly average level from both players and Nadal was somewhat fortunate to come away with the win, admitting he was ‘destroyed physically’ after the match.
Having lost his last four straight matches against top 10 opponents at the Australian Open, Nadal will have to lift if he is to overcome the World No. 7 on Friday.
Berrettini has well and truly established himself as a genuine top 10 player and Grand Slam title contender over the last couple of years, with the Italian set to play a third major semi-final.
Only Djokovic has been able to beat Berrettini in Grand Slam matches over the last year, with the World No. 1 getting the better of him at Roland Garros, Wimbledon and the US Open in 2021.
Berrettini had a tough finish to 2021 as he was forced to retire from the ATP Finals with injury, but it hasn’t taken long for him to find his groove again – although, he’s been involved in multiple lengthy battles so far in Melbourne.
Indeed, Berrettini has needed four sets to get past Brandon Nakashima and Stefan Kozlov and five sets to survive Carlos Alcaraz and Gael Monfils. In both those five-setters, Berrettini won the first two sets, dropped the next two and regrouped in the decider to emerge triumphant.
Nadal and Berrettini have only played once before, with the Spaniard coming away with a straight sets win in the 2019 US Open semi-final. However, Berrettini is a much better player today and is repeatedly finding ways to win in slams. Nadal didn’t look great against Shapovalov and has been eliminated when coming up against top 10 players in his last four appearances in Melbourne. Berrettini is a great price as the underdog to reach his second major final.
