Rafael Nadal vs Marcos Giron Tips, Prediction & Preview

Rafael Nadal has a favourable opening round match in front of him as he prepares to face World No. 66 Marcos Giron at the Australian Open on Monday.

Nadal has somewhat flown under the radar in the lead-up to the first Grand Slam of the season as he continues his quest to capture a record 21st major crown.

Drawn in the same half of the draw as Novak Djokovic, Nadal’s bid to emerge triumphant in Melbourne will obviously be assisted if the World No. 1 is barred from competing.

However, Nadal still has a tough draw in front him, with the likes of Hubert Hurkacz, Karen Khachanov, Denis Shapovalov and Alexander Zverev all potential obstacles before the semi-finals.

But as far this first round goes, Nadal shouldn’t have much trouble. The Spaniard had the perfect warm-up to the Australian Open, winning the Melbourne Summer Set title on Rod Laver Arena without dropping a single set.

Nadal looked solid after missing four months with a foot injury and we can’t see Giron doing too much to make him feel uncomfortable here.

Giron had a career-best season in 2021, making the third round of a slam for the first time at Roland Garros and reaching the semi-finals of the Sofia Open and quarter-finals of three other events, which propelled him to his best ranking of No. 57 in November.

However, Giron failed to win a single set in his two warm-up events in Melbourne and Sydney, losing to Ricardas Berankis and Jordan Thompson.

Nadal is obviously a considerable step up in class from those players, so backing the Spaniard to win 3-0 is fairly decent value here.
