Naomi Osaka vs Amanda Anisimova Prediction & Preview

One of the most eagerly-anticipated matches in the women’s draw so far pits defending champion Naomi Osaka up against resurgent young gun Amanda Anisimova in the third round on Friday.

Osaka’s break from the game throughout 2021 has been well documented, but the two-time Australian Open champion looks refreshed and in a good space as she looks to defend her title in Melbourne.

Having slipped to No. 14 in the world, Osaka got some good match practice under her belt in the lead-up Melbourne Summer Classic tournament with two victories before withdrawing as a precaution.

Osaka has been solid without being overly spectacular in her first two matches at the Australian Open, defeating Maria Camila Osorio Serrano and Madison Brengle in straight sets, coming from a break down in the second set of the latter.

With a blockbuster fourth round clash with World No. 1 Ash Barty on the horizon, Osaka certainly cannot afford to take Anisimova lightly.

Anisimova experienced a rapid rise after reaching the French Open semi-finals in 2019 (the youngest semi-finalist in Paris since 2006), but she has struggled for her best tennis since the pandemic and slipped out of the top 75 in 2021.

Still only 20 years of age, Anisimova couldn’t have started the year any better, lifting her second WTA title at the Melbourne Summer Set, defeating Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the final, while she also took the scalp of Olympic gold medalist Belinda Bencic in the second round of the Australian Open on Tuesday.

That was an enormous win for Anisimova and would have re-instilled belief that she can beat the very best players in the world.

I give Anisimova a decent chance of pulling off the upset here. Osaka hasn’t played any pressure-filled tennis since the US Open and if things get tight, this match will be very interesting. Anisimova has the firepower to match Osaka from the back of the court, especially on the backhand side.

Taking Anisimova at the games line looks a good bet here, while the American to prevail in three sets give some solid value.
