Emma Raducanu vs Danka Kovinic Tips, Prediction & Preview

Reigning US Open champion Emma Raducanu is targeting another memorable Grand Slam run as she prepares to face World No. 98 Danka Kovinic for a place in the Australian Open third round on Thursday.

Raducanu put together the most extraordinary run in tennis history to win the 2021 US Open from qualifying without dropping a single set, but the British teenager understandably struggled after such an incredible achievement, winning just two matches for the remainder of the season.

Things didn’t look great for the 19-year-old when she was crushed 6-0 6-1 by Elena Rybakina in her only lead-in match in Sydney last week.

However, Raducanu turned heads once again with a sensational performance against fellow US Open champion Sloane Stephens in the opening round on Tuesday night.

Raducanu prevailed 6-0 2-6 6-1 in easily her best match since New York, winning the opening set in just 18 minutes.

It certainly wasn’t the cleanest match – Raducanu made 30 unforced errors and struck just 15 minutes, but in terms of confidence, it was an invaluable victory.

Raducanu will definitely fancy her chances of a more polished display against Kovinic, who has failed to win back-to-back matches at any level on tour since April last year in Charleston.

Those results have kept her barely inside the top 100 and signs don’t suggest Kovinic will be able to trouble Raducanu after she only just scraped by World No. 210 Su Jeong Jang 6-3 2-6 6-4 in over three hours in her opening round.

We’re not entirely convinced Raducanu is back playing at her US Open level or is a genuine title threat just yet, but if she can deliver a straight sets win here, the young Brit will be nicely positioned heading into the third round.
