Emma Raducanu vs Sloane Stephens Tips, Prediction & Preview

It’s a battle of US Open champions in the first round of the Australian Open as Emma Raducanu and Sloane Stephens square off in a blockbuster showdown inside Margaret Court Arena on Tuesday night.

Raducanu put together the most extraordinary run to a Grand Slam title in tennis history last year, coming from qualifying and not dropping a set as she stunned the world in New York to take home the US Open silverware.

This time last year, Raducanu had never won a tour-level match, but a fourth round run at Wimbledon prepared her to do the unthinkable at Flushing Meadows.

However, with such a triumph comes immense pressure and it’s safe to say Raducanu is struggling to deal with her new-found place in the spotlight.

The 19-year-old has lost four of her last six matches and her only lead-in match to the Australian Open was a 6-0 6-1 demolition at the hands of Elena Rybakina in Sydney last week. For what it’s worth, Rybakina pulled out with fatigue from her next match.

Meanwhile, Stephens has been playing below her best for a few years now and actually hasn’t beaten a top 20 player on a hardcourt since 2018 – although this match is a special circumstance, with Raducanu having barely played on tour.

Stephens lost 12 of her 19 matches on hardcourt last year, but she is capable of magnificent tennis and is a former semi-finalist in Melbourne. Catapulted back into primetime in such a big match could very well bring the best out of the American.

Overall, this is a tough match to predict because we just don’t know how both players will react to the situation. Raducanu is still so inexperienced despite her historic success and the signs didn’t look good in Sydney.

If Stephens can play within herself, there’s a decent chance Raducanu might just buckle under the weight of expectation and hand her the win.
