Roger Federer vs Denis Istomin Tips & Predictions
Playing the French Open for just the second time since 2016, Federer begins his campaign in the opening round against World No. 203 Istomin.
Federer’s preparation for Roland Garros has been far from ideal. The Swiss legend only played one match on clay in the lead-in, losing his opening match in Geneva to Pablo Andujar in three sets.
The 39-year-old has competed three times in 2021, winning his first round match in Doha against Dan Evans in three sets before falling to Nikoloz Basilashvili.
Istomin is far from his best and like Federer, in the twilight of his career, but the Uzbek has been as high as No.33 in the world (back in 2012) and is best known for beating Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open in 2017.
The 34-year-old is a powerful and flat hitter, which isn’t exactly what you want on clay, but nevertheless is capable of some big tennis when in the zone.
Istomin also has the benefit of having played three matches (dropping just one set along the way) at Roland Garros after successfully qualifying for the main draw.
Federer has dropped a set in all three of his matches this year and while he is 7-0 over Istomin, the Uzbek has managed to take sets from him before.
As such, Federer to prevail and both players to win a set looks the best bet here with bet365.
