Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Hubert Hurkacz Tips, Prediction & Preview
It’s a tough opening match of the season for both Tsitsipas and Hurkacz as the top 10 stars square off in ATP Cup action in Sydney on Saturday night to launch a new year of tennis in 2022.
Tsitsipas will be representing Greece and Hurkacz will compete for Poland as the pair look to get their respective nations off to winning starts in Group D, which also features Argentina – led by Diego Schwartzman – and Georgia, who are spearheaded by Nikoloz Basilashvili.
As is the case with every first match of the season, there’s an element of unknown surrounding this showdown.
Tsitsipas and Hurkacz both qualified for the season-ending ATP Finals in Turin after career-best years in 2021, but each suffered from injuries as their season ended on a tough note.
Hurkacz ended up losing his last four matches of the season – but all four did come against Novak Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev, Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev, while Tsitsipas lost four of his last five, retired in the Paris Masters and withdrew from the ATP Finals after a straight sets loss to Andrey Rublev.
These two are no strangers to each other having played a total of seven times on the ATP Tour – and incredibly, six of those encounters have gone the distance. All of those matches also took place on hardcourt.
Tsitsipas has won five of the seven meetings and if we are to assume both are fully fit, the Greek is the favourite to prevail once again.
