Djokovic vs Dzumhur Preview and Prediction

Djokovic arrives at the US Open as the overwhelming favourite to win an 18th Grand Slam title, with his biggest rivals Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer absent from New York this season.

It’s tough to see anyone getting the better of Djokovic over the next fortnight, but the Serbian hasn’t exactly had the ideal preparations heading into the tournament, battling a neck injury and stomach problems in winning the Cincinnati Masters, while he’s also leading an insanely complicated political upheaval within tennis that is dividing authorities and players alike.

In saying that, Djokovic has never had trouble in putting off-court issues to the side before and I don’t expect that to distract him, while it remains to be seen how he recovers physically from draining three-set victories over Milos Raonic and Roberto Bautista Agut in the semi-finals and final of Cincinnati over the weekend.

There is a slight chance Djokovic will start his US Open campaign slowly as a result, but the World No. 1 is a master of recovery and I think he’ll be near full fitness again come Monday night.

Dzumhur is the unlucky man that was drawn to confront Djokovic in the opening round and he doesn’t really have the weapons to do any long-lasting damage to the top seed.

A former top 25 player back in 2018, Dzumhur has slipped outside the world’s top 100 and doesn’t own a win at ATP level this season, while he also lost in the first round of Cincinnati qualifying to Dennis Novak last week.

A counterpuncher and retriever from the baseline, Dzumhur doesn’t have the style to force Djokovic into uncomfortable positions and he will have to be incredibly aggressive to even snatch a set.

Djokovic is 23-0 in 2020 and hasn’t dropped more than two games in a set to Dzumhur in their previous two meetings. It might not be a complete whitewash like their other matches due to Djokovic’s short recovery period from Cincinnati, but en easy opening round victory for the World No. 1 nevertheless awaits on Monday night.
