The Willie Mullins-trained 10-year-old, ridden by Paul Townend, carried top weight of 11-10 and still prevailed in emphatic fashion to claim his second Grand National after winning in 2024. For our original selections and pre-race analysis, see our Grand National 2026 tips and predictions.

How It Unfolded

I Am Maximus tracked the inside rail for much of the race, travelling powerfully under Paul Townend as the field was steadily whittled down by the demanding Aintree fences. The first circuit took its toll early, with Panic Attack, Gerri Colombe and Marble Sands among those to fall, while Banbridge and several others unseated their riders.

Heading into the second circuit, the field had already been cut in half. Ben Jones made a bold move on Jordans two fences from home, briefly challenging for the lead, but I Am Maximus responded under Townend and stormed home to win going away. Iroko, under Jonjo O’Neill Jr., ran a huge race to finish second at 18/1 for JP McManus, while Jordans held on for third at 28/1.

History Made

The result was historic on multiple levels:

  • I Am Maximus became the first horse since Red Rum to regain the Grand National title, having won in 2024 before finishing behind Nick Rockett in 2025. The 10-year-old is now a two-time winner.
  • I Am Maximus became the first horse since Red Rum in 1974 to carry top weight (11-10) to victory — a phenomenal training and riding performance from Mullins and Townend.
  • Willie Mullins became the first trainer since Vincent O’Brien in the 1950s to win three successive Grand Nationals — I Am Maximus (2024), Nick Rockett (2025) and I Am Maximus again (2026).
  • JP McManus became the most successful owner in Grand National history with four winners.

How Did Our Tips Go?

Selection Bet Type SP Result Verdict
Iroko Each Way 18/1 2nd E/W WINNER
Favori De Champdou Win 40/1 6th Not placed
Panic Attack Each Way — Fell Fell
Nick Rockett (Mullins Watch) — — Non-runner Withdrawn (coughing)

Our top selection Iroko ran a brilliant race to finish second at 18/1, delivering a strong each-way return for anyone who followed our tips. Favori De Champdou ran respectably to finish 6th but never threatened the places. Panic Attack unfortunately fell during the first circuit, while Nick Rockett was withdrawn on race morning after coughing — ending the 2025 champion’s bid to become only the second horse after Red Rum to win back-to-back Grand Nationals.

Non-Finishers

The Grand National’s demanding fences took their usual toll, with only 16 of the 40 starters completing the course.

  • Fell (7): Panic Attack, Gerri Colombe, Marble Sands, Top of the Bill, Stellar Story, Mr Vango, Quai De Bourbon
  • Unseated rider (7): Banbridge, Beauport, Grangeclare West, Perceval Legallois, Captain Cody, Jagwar, Oscar’s Brother
  • Pulled up (4): The Real Whacker, Amirite, Lecky Watson, Spanish Harlem
