BETTING ON RUGBY UNION

The National Rugby Championship (NRC) is the top-level tournament in Australia which was inaugurated in 2014. It consists of eight teams; seven of them are from Australia and one is from Fiji.

Bookmakers like Ladbrokes and Sportsbet offer comprehensive rugby union betting markets on competitions such as the NRC, Super Rugby and the Rugby World Cup itself.

RUGBY UNION BET TYPES

The rise of sports betting is no different when it comes to rugby union. Once upon a time you would back the team that you thought would win a game and that would be it. There are so many more markets now when it comes to betting on sports and rugby union. Here are some of the most popular rugby union bet types.

HEAD TO HEAD

The easiest bet type in sports betting is the head to head bet. You are selecting which team will win a rugby union match. The team with the shorter odds is called the favourite and the other team is known as the underdog.

LINE BETTING

Line betting or handicap betting as it is also known is when bookmakers handicap teams by a certain number of points in order to make the game a 50/50 contest. A short-priced favourite may have a handicap of -11.5 points for example. If you were to make this team, they would need to win by 12 or more points in order for your bet to be paid out as a winner.

WINNING MARGINS

Margin betting is available on rugby union matches. It is where bookmakers break up the number of possible end results by putting into margins. The most common is Team A 1-12 and 13+ as well as Team B 1-12 and 13+.

HALF-TIME/FULL-TIME DOUBLE

With this bet type, you are backing the team you think will be leading at half time and then also at full time. Some teams will be slow starters and may trail consistently at half time before powering home to win. A Draw is also an option in this market. The different combinations available are:

Team A/Team A
Team A/Team B
Team A/Draw
Team B/Team B
Team B/Team A
Team B/Draw
Draw/Draw
Draw/Team A
Draw/Team B

FIRST TRYSCORER

Many sports fans enjoy trying to work out who will be the first player to score a try in a match. In addition to first try scorer markets, you can also bet on last try scorers.
