Both Tests are part of the Bledisloe Cup, which in 2026 is a standalone two-Test series rather than part of the Rugby Championship. How the two sides arrive

This is where the value is, and it is the part most previews skip. New Zealand are in the middle of their first full tour of South Africa since 1996, an eight-match trip billed as Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry: four Tests against the Springboks plus midweek provincial games. The tour has gone well so far, with wins over the Stormers 38-21 in Cape Town and the Sharks 54-0 in Durban. It finishes with a fourth Test against South Africa in Baltimore on 12 September, a genuinely strange way to end a southern-hemisphere tour, and then the squad turns around for Eden Park on 10 October.

The read: squad load and travel are the strongest arguments for Australia in this series, and they get stronger as it goes on. That points at the second Test in Sydney rather than the opener. At Eden Park, where the record below is what it is, a tired All Blacks side is still a very hard bet against.

Wallabies vs All Blacks head-to-head

New Zealand won both Tests in 2025, 33-24 at Eden Park and 28-14 at Optus Stadium, the second of those completing a record eleventh straight win over the Wallabies. Australia have not held the Bledisloe Cup since 2002.

The venue split matters more than the overall record. Australia have not beaten New Zealand at Eden Park since 1986 and are 0 from 23 there since, and New Zealand have not lost at the ground to anyone since France beat them in 1994.
