The Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival is staged at Doomben and Eagle Farm racecourses during May and June each year with several Group 1 races taking place including the Stradbroke Handicap, Doomben Cup, Doomben 10,000, Kingsford-Smith Cup, Queesland Oaks, Queensland Derby and the JJ Atkins.
The Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival is the premier carnival in Queensland and is staged at Doomben and Eagle Farm racecourses in Brisbane during May and June each year.
Several Group 1 races take place during the carnival, headed by the Stradbroke Handicap – the richest race of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival – and also including the Kingsford-Smith Cup, Doomben Cup, Doomben 10,000, Queensland Oaks, Queensland Derby and the JJ Atkins.
The Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m) is the biggest race in prestige terms and headlines Doomben Racecourse’s last day of action during the carnival. It is the leading sprint of the carnival and has been won in the past by the popular names of Apache Cat, Takeover Target and Falvelon.
Doomben also stages the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m), which attracts the best middle-distance and staying performers from across Australian and headlines a top-class afternoon of action.
Eagle Farm Racecourse hosts its first meeting of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival with the newly-formed Group 1 Kingsford-Smith Cup, which replaces the BTC Cup, before staging of the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2400m), which features the best of the three-year-old fillies.
The following week at Eagle Farm, Brisbane’s richest race is staged with the running of the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) on the same day that the Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m) and Group 1 The JJ Atkins (1600m) take place.
The Stradbroke is one of the leading sprints in Australia, while the best three-year-old colts will go head-to-head in the Queensland Derby. The JJ Atkins (1600m), formerly known as The TJ Smith, sees the best two-year-olds clash on the final day of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.
