Guide to the Magic Millions Carnival

Staged at the Gold Coast during the 18-day Magic Millions yearling sales, the Magic Millions Raceday is unlike any other meeting in Australia: only horses bought through a Magic Millions sale are eligible to run, which turns the card into a showcase for the sales company’s graduates and a marketing spectacle as much as a race meeting. Brand ambassador Zara Tindall and the famous beach gallops have made it a fixture of the Australian summer.

The 2YO Classic (1200m, $3m) is the richest two-year-old race in the country and the day’s centrepiece, while the 3YO Guineas (1400m, $3m, set weights plus penalties) and the Magic Millions Cup (1400m handicap, $2m) round out the headline trio. The ten-race program also features the Magic Millions Sprint, Subzero/Stayers, a 2YO and 3YO fillies & mares race and other restricted events — all for sales graduates.

Magic Millions Betting Angles

  • Trust the spring-and-summer juvenile form. The 2YO Classic is often decided by horses that have already shown sharp early speed — the proven first-up two-year-olds with a strong barrier are the core of the race.
  • Inside draws on the Gold Coast track are an advantage over the shorter trips; track the barrier draw closely before betting.
  • Each-way in the Cup. The Magic Millions Cup is a wide-open handicap where value sits in the each-way and extra-place markets.
