Pantoja vs Erceg Preview

UFC Flyweight champion Alexandre Pantoja will be looking to defend his belt for the second time this Sunday when he fights in front of his home crowd in Brazil as the main event at UFC 301.

His opponent is the little known West Australian Steve Erceg who gets his chance at UFC gold having entered the biggest promotion in the sport less than 12 months ago.

Erceg forced the UFC’s hand to give him a contract having won eight fights in a row including the Eternal MMA Flyweight championship in Australia before putting pen to paper.

He debuted in the UFC on just eight days notice and was thrown into the deep end straight away at UFC 289 in Canada where he secured a dominant unanimous decision.

The Aussie notched up his 11th win in a row with a walk off knockout of Matt Schnell in March and when the UFC needed an opponent for Pantoja in Brazil he received the phone call.

Alexandre Pantoja put together three wins in a row, two by submission, to earn his title shot against Brandon Moreno in July last year via a split decision and then defended the belt for the first time in a hard fought decision against Brandon Royval.

It has been an incredible rise for the Aussie battler from Perth and to say he is being thrown to the wolves would be an understatement and there have been few instances in the history of the UFC that a fighter has the opportunity to fight for a title in just his fourth fight in the promotion.

There is no doubting his willpower and although those that have doubted his skill level have clearly been proven this is a whole other task to beat the champion in front of his home crowd in Rio.

Everyone loves an Aussie underdog and we’ll certainly be cheering the Aussie on but from a betting standpoint I can’t be with him.
