Our tips and predictions for all eight Australia Cup Round of 16 ties, 8 to 12 August 2026, after three A-League clubs were knocked out by lower-league opposition in the Round of 32.

The Hahn Australia Cup Round of 16 runs from Saturday 8 August to Wednesday 12 August 2026, and this year’s competition has already been turned upside down. Three A-League clubs went out in the Round of 32: Newcastle Jets lost 3-2 to Preston Lions, Perth Glory were beaten on penalties by Lions FC after a 1-1 draw, and Central Coast Mariners were knocked out by Sydney United 58.

That carnage shapes everything below. Four of the eight ties are all-NPL affairs, which guarantees at least four lower-league clubs in the quarter-finals, and the A-League sides still standing mostly have to travel to small grounds on weeknights. Here are our predictions and betting angles for every tie, plus where the value sits when the favourite is short.

Western Sydney Wanderers vs Melbourne Victory

Round opener: two A-League sides, one goes out

The round opened on Saturday night with the only all-A-League tie of the eight, and a proper one: Western Sydney Wanderers against Melbourne Victory at Marconi Stadium. Neutral-ish, tight, and with no NPL banana skin to blame if it goes wrong.

By the time you read this the result will be in. Whoever came through joins the quarter-final draw as one of the few remaining A-League clubs, because this competition has already eaten several of them.

Brisbane Roar vs Sydney FC

Prediction: Sydney FC to advance

When: Sunday 9 August, 5:00pm AEST · Venue: Spencer Park

The tie of the round. Sydney FC put five past Bayswater City in the Round of 32 with Tiago Quintal helping himself to a hat-trick, and they travel to Brisbane as favourites at $2.25 in the 90-minute market. Remember that is a three-way market in cup football, so the draw is live and extra time is a real outcome.

A Sunday afternoon kick-off at Spencer Park rather than a big stadium is the sort of setting that flattens favourites. We still lean Sydney to go through, but the under 2.5 goals line at around $1.82 reads better than the win market at the price.

South Melbourne vs Fremantle City

Prediction: South Melbourne to advance

When: Sunday 9 August, 7:40pm AEST · Venue: Lakeside Stadium

An all-NPL tie that guarantees a lower-league club reaches the quarter-finals. South Melbourne are one of the biggest names in Australian football history and they are at home at Lakeside, where they are a genuinely difficult night out.

Fremantle City have travelled across the country for this. That is a long trip for a midweek-style cup tie, and home advantage in NPL cup football is worth more than most markets price it at.

SD Raiders vs Macarthur FC

Prediction: Macarthur FC to advance, but respect the venue

When: Tuesday 11 August, 7:30pm AEST · Venue: Fairfield Showground

Macarthur are an A-League club going to Fairfield Showground on a Tuesday night, which is exactly the fixture profile that has already claimed several of their rivals this year. SD Raiders get a tight ground, a partisan crowd and nothing to lose.

Class should tell over 90 or 120 minutes and we expect Macarthur through, but this is not a line to lean on heavily. Cup ties like this are why the handicap markets exist.

Lions FC vs Melbourne City

Prediction: Melbourne City to advance

When: Tuesday 11 August, 7:30pm AEST · Venue: Spencer Park

The best story of the round. Lions FC knocked out Perth Glory in the Round of 32, drawing 1-1 before winning 4-2 on penalties, and they now host Melbourne City at Spencer Park.

City are the strongest side left in the competition on paper and should have too much. But Lions have already proven they can take an A-League club to penalties, and a shootout is the great leveller. If you want the upset, the to-advance market is where the value sits rather than the 90-minute win.

APIA Leichhardt vs Sydney United 58

Prediction: Sydney United 58 to advance

When: Wednesday 12 August, 7:30pm AEST · Venue: Venue to be confirmed

Two of Sydney’s most storied NPL clubs, and another tie that guarantees a lower-league quarter-finalist. Sydney United 58 arrive with a scalp already banked after beating Central Coast Mariners in the Round of 32.

That result matters: a side that has just eliminated an A-League club carries momentum and belief into a derby like this. The venue was still to be confirmed at the time of writing, so check before you travel.

Brunswick Juventus vs Preston Lions

Prediction: Preston Lions to advance

When: Wednesday 12 August, 7:30pm AEST · Venue: CB Smith Reserve

Preston Lions produced one of the results of the Round of 32, beating Newcastle Jets 3-2 to put an A-League club out. They now face Brunswick Juventus at CB Smith Reserve in a Melbourne NPL derby with a quarter-final place on the line.

Preston have the form and the confidence of a giant-killing behind them. In a tie this even, that counts.

North Sunshine Eagles vs Heidelberg United

Prediction: Heidelberg United to advance

When: Wednesday 12 August, 7:45pm AEST · Venue: Ironbark Fields

The last tie of the round and the fourth all-NPL fixture, which tells you how much damage the lower leagues have already done to this year’s competition. Heidelberg United are one of Victoria’s strongest NPL outfits and carry the better pedigree at this level.

North Sunshine Eagles have home advantage at Ironbark Fields. In a knockout that is worth something, but Heidelberg should have the quality to come through.

How to bet the Australia Cup

Cup football is not league football and the markets reflect it. Three things worth remembering at this stage of the competition:

• The 90-minute market has a draw. A favourite at $2.25 is not a $2.25 favourite to advance. If you want the team to progress, use the to-advance or to-qualify market instead.
• Extra time and penalties are live. Lions FC beat Perth Glory 4-2 on penalties in the previous round. Shootouts flatten the gap between an A-League squad and an NPL one completely.
• Venue matters more than usual. Small grounds, tight pitches and weeknight kick-offs are worth real goals to the home side, and that is exactly where the upsets have come from.
