The road here
Australia (2nd, Group D — 4 points). Tony Popovic’s side opened with a statement 2-0 win over Türkiye, came up short 0-2 against the hosts USA, then ground out the 0-0 draw with Paraguay they needed to lock up second place on goal difference. The story of their group was resilience: a clean sheet and a back-three platform that conceded just twice in three games. The question mark is at the other end — only two goals scored across the group.
Egypt (2nd, Group G — 5 points). The Pharaohs drew 1-1 with Belgium, beat New Zealand 3-1, and drew 1-1 with IR Iran to pip Iran for second on goal difference behind group winners Belgium. Five goals in three games makes them the more potent attacking side on paper, and in Salah they carry a forward capable of settling any knockout on his own.
Australia’s knockout hopes
Everything about Australia’s group suggests this will be a low-block, counter-and-set-piece game plan. The back three of Harry Souttar, Alessandro Circati and the supporting cast was excellent against Paraguay, goalkeeper Patrick Beach was untroubled, and Jackson Irvine anchors the midfield. The flank threat of Jordan Bos and the creativity of Cristian Volpato are the most likely sources of a goal. If the Socceroos keep it tight and take the game deep, they are well drilled for exactly that kind of contest.
The Egypt threat — it starts with Salah
Egypt set up in a 4-2-3-1 built to get the ball to Mohamed Salah in transition. Containing him — doubling up on Australia’s right and cutting the supply line — is the entire defensive assignment. Beyond Salah, Egypt are organised rather than spectacular; the 3-1 win over New Zealand showed they can punish weak defending, but the Belgium and Iran draws showed they can be held when pressed. Stop Salah and Australia’s clean-sheet machine has every chance.
Australia v Egypt — match tips & best bets
The nations have almost no competitive head-to-head history, so form and shape are the guide. Two second-placed sides, both low-scoring, in a one-off knockout points to a cagey, tight contest.
- Unders / a low-scoring game. Australia have scored and conceded sparingly; Egypt’s two draws were tight. A first goal at a premium is the most likely script — the under and “draw at half-time” markets appeal.
- Australia double chance / draw-no-bet. For backers who fancy the Socceroos’ defensive structure to take this to extra time or penalties, the draw-no-bet and double-chance lines are the disciplined way in rather than the outright.
- Salah involvement. If you’re siding with Egypt, Salah anytime scorer or shots/assist markets are the obvious route — he is the one player most likely to decide it.
