Tote betting and fixed-odds betting are the two ways to back a runner in Australian racing — and knowing the difference can change what you collect. With the tote your dividend is set by a shared pool after the race; with fixed odds your price is locked the moment you bet. This guide explains how tote betting works, the tote-vs-fixed decision, the Best Tote options, and when to use each.

What Is Tote Betting?
Tote betting (also called pari-mutuel or pool betting) pools all the money bet into a market, takes out a set percentage, and divides the rest among the winning tickets. Your dividend isn’t known until the race is run — it depends on how much was bet on each runner and how the pool settles. The tote runs Win, Place and all the exotics (quinella, exacta, trifecta, First 4 and the quaddie).
Tote vs Fixed Odds
The key difference is when your price is set:
| Tote | Fixed odds | |
|---|---|---|
| Price set | After the race, from the pool | Locked when you bet |
| Certainty | Unknown until settled | You know your return upfront |
| Best for | Roughies, exotics, big pools | Locking a good price early |
Fixed odds give you certainty — your $3.50 stays $3.50 even if the horse firms to $2.50. The tote can pay more (or less) than the starting price, and often returns better dividends on longshots when the crowd backs the favourites. Many punters take fixed on short-priced runners and tote on roughies.
Best Tote, Top Tote & Mid Tote
Bookmakers offer tote-derived options so you’re not locked to one pool:
- Best Tote (Best of the Best / BOB): you’re paid the best dividend of the major state totes — a popular default.
- Top Tote / Top Fluc: the highest of the tote prices, or the top fluctuation.
- Middle Tote / SP: the middle of the three totes, or Starting Price.
These let you take tote upside with a bit of protection. Availability varies by bookmaker — compare them in our best horse racing betting sites guide.
When Should You Bet Tote vs Fixed?
Take fixed odds when you’ve found a good price and want to lock it in before it firms — especially on well-fancied runners. Lean to the tote (or Best Tote) on longshots and in exotics, where the pool often pays more than fixed and the exotic markets only settle on the tote anyway.

Tote Betting FAQs
What does tote mean in betting?
Tote (pari-mutuel) betting pools all bets together, takes out a set percentage, and shares the rest among winning tickets. Your dividend is declared after the race rather than locked when you bet.
What is an example of a tote bet?
A Win or Place bet taken at tote (or Best Tote) rather than fixed odds, and all exotics – quinella, exacta, trifecta, First 4 and the quaddie – which only settle on the tote pool.
Is it better to bet fixed or tote?
Fixed odds give certainty and suit short-priced runners and locking an early price. The tote can pay more on longshots and is required for exotics. Many punters use both depending on the runner.
What is the difference between tote and a bookmaker?
A bookmaker sets and guarantees fixed odds and carries the risk; the tote is a shared pool where punters effectively bet against each other and the dividend depends on how the pool settles.
