The 2026 Melbourne Cup field of 24 and the barrier draw with every rider and weight: Point Of Law drew barrier 9, and Saint George and Defiantly are out. How the field was decided and what the draw means for betting.

The Melbourne Cup 2026 field. The Cup is run at 3:00pm AEDT on Tuesday 3 November 2026 at Flemington, and the field is capped at 24 runners with no emergencies. Melbourne Cup 2026 field: key dates

The field is not one announcement but a sequence. Each stage narrows hundreds of nominations down to 24, and each one moves the market.

How the Melbourne Cup field is decided

Three mechanisms decide who runs. Understanding them is genuinely useful for betting, because each one tells you something about a horse’s condition and connections’ intent.

1. Ballot exemption. Winning one of the ballot-exempt races (11 in 2026) guarantees a start, racing’s golden ticket. A horse that wins one is in regardless of rating, which is why connections of borderline stayers target them so aggressively.

2. The handicapper’s ratings. Everything not ballot-exempt is ranked on the handicapper’s assessment. This is where the order of entry does its work.

3. The ballot itself. Once ballot-exempt runners and the highest-rated nominations are placed, the remainder of the 24 is settled by the balloting system after Derby Day’s final race.

Ballot-exempt races: the golden tickets

In 2026 the VRC named 11 ballot-exempt races, known as golden tickets, and winning any of them secures a place in the field. They ran from March to the Cox Plate on 24 October, and all 11 have now been won. Five of the winners are in the final field: Juja Kibo (Moonee Valley Gold Cup, run at Flemington), Point Of Law (Geelong Cup), Mr Monaco (Bart Cummings), Zakouma (Andrew Ramsden) and Shockletz (Archer Stakes). Defiantly (Prix Kergorlay, Deauville) was ballot-exempt but was withdrawn after a final veterinary check. The other five, including Caulfield Cup winner Kingswood and Cox Plate winner Cosmic Crusader, were withdrawn or not nominated.

In practice the spring staying races are where Cup fields are made. The Caulfield Cup is the classic pointer, Without A Fight completed the Caulfield Cup–Melbourne Cup double in 2023, while the Cox Plate, Geelong Cup and Bart Cummings all feed the field. The old Lexus Stakes is now the Archer Stakes, run in September, so no race on Derby Day earns a start. The last chance in 2026 was the Bendigo Cup on Wednesday 28 October, for horses just outside the top 24.

Melbourne Cup order of entry explained

The order of entry is a live leaderboard of Cup contention. Once weights are out in mid-September, every nomination sits in a ranked list; ballot-exempt winners are lifted clear of it, and the rest jostle on rating.

Read it as a bubble, not a bracket. Horses inside the top 24 are provisionally in, but a single ballot-exempt result further down can push out the horse sitting 24th. After third acceptances on 26 October, one published order of entry had Hopewell Rock 24th and The Euphrates first out, with the Bendigo Cup able to change that. That is why the order of entry is worth checking again after every major lead-up, and why late-October market moves are often about starts rather than form.

Melbourne Cup barrier draw

The barrier draw is conducted once the final field is set, after Derby Day. Over 3200m an outside gate is far less punishing than it is in a sprint, there is plenty of time to cross, but the draw still matters for tactics: it dictates who can find the fence, who has to work early, and which horses get a cheap run in transit.

If you like a horse before the draw, it is usually worth waiting for the barriers before committing. Prices frequently move on the draw alone.

Melbourne Cup odds & favourites

Cup markets open early and stay volatile right through the spring. Prices move on ballot exemption, on the weights, on the draw, and on scratchings, often more than on form itself. Because it is a 24-runner handicap, the favourite is rarely short, and the Cup has a long history of boilovers: Knight’s Choice won at $91 in 2024.

On the morning of Monday 2 November, the day before the race, Point Of Law was still the $6.50 favourite with Ladbrokes, ahead of Trustyourinstinct at $8 and Hopewell Rock and Shockletz at $10. International raiders in the field

Since the 1990s the Cup has been a genuinely international contest, and overseas horses now take a large share of the 24. Form out of Royal Ascot’s Gold Cup, the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and the major European staying races reads across well. The questions worth asking of any raider are the same each year: has it handled the quarantine and travel, does it have a two-mile pedigree, and can it carry the weight it has been given.

How to bet a 24-horse field

A 24-runner handicap is the wrong race for a straight win bet and the right race for structure. Each-way makes obvious sense with a field this size, and the exotics are where the Cup pays, but only if you size them properly.
