How the 2026 Caulfield Cup Was Won
Gavin Bedggood’s seven-year-old Kingswood gave John Allen a Caulfield Cup at $26, holding off Ciaron Maher’s Saint George ($10) by half a length, with Roger Varian’s Enfjaar ($12) a length back in third. The Turnbull Stakes winner Cosmic Crusader started a $4.80 favourite and ran fourth, and the Naturalism Stakes winner Zahrann ($7.50) finished sixth.
The race was marred by a fall. The defending champion Half Yours fell and walked away from it, but the mare Ohope Wins was fatally injured.
What the Result Means
The Caulfield Cup normally earns its winner a ballot-exempt start in the Melbourne Cup, but Bedggood has said Kingswood will not take up that “golden ticket”. Half Yours is now highly unlikely to defend his Melbourne Cup after the fall, and Saint George came out of the race at about $11 for the Melbourne Cup on 3 November. See our Melbourne Cup tips for the latest market.
How our tips went: a losing day. Our best bet Zahrann ran sixth, our saver Half Yours fell, and the trifecta box missed the winner. Saint George, who we marked as a big runner from barrier 2, did run second.
