The Story So Far
Matt Payne and Garth Tander won a 2025 classic for Penrite Racing, surviving a wet, safety-car-strewn race and a dramatic three-way finish, Ford’s first Bathurst victory since 2019 and a sixth for veteran co-driver Tander. With Toyota joining Ford and Chevrolet on the grid in 2026, the Great Race shapes as one of the most open in years.
The 2026 Entry: Lowndes Returns
Twenty-six cars are entered, the usual twenty-four full-timers plus two wildcards, and both wildcards are stories in their own right. Craig Lowndes is back at Mount Panorama for Team 18 alongside Bayley Hall. Lowndes has won the Great Race seven times, and a wildcard with that name on it is never just a make-weight entry. Garry Rogers Motorsport also returns to Supercars with Nathan Herne and James Moffat in an ex-Triple Eight Camaro.
The co-driver market reshuffled more than usual. Will Davison, a two-time Bathurst winner, joins Matt Payne at Grove Racing, which pairs the defending race winner with one of the most experienced enduro drivers on the grid. Nick Percat moves to Triple Eight alongside Scott Pye. Dick Johnson Racing and PremiAir Racing are the only teams carrying unchanged co-driver line-ups from 2025.
