How the Great Race works

Bathurst is not a normal Supercars round, and that is exactly why it produces the results it does.

Two drivers, one car. Every entry pairs a full-time driver with a co-driver, and both must complete a minimum share of the race. A quick co-driver is worth as much as a quick primary driver — and a co-driver mistake has decided more Bathursts than mechanical failure has.

The mountain punishes everything. Mount Panorama is a public road circuit with concrete walls, a 174-metre elevation change and almost no run-off. There is no margin. Safety cars are near-certain, and their timing relative to the pit window reshuffles the order more than raw pace does.

Strategy over speed. Across 1,000km a team will pit six or seven times. Fuel windows, tyre choice and whether to gamble under a late safety car decide it. The fastest car frequently does not win.

The event builds across four days, with practice and qualifying from Thursday, the Top Ten Shootout on Saturday afternoon, and the race itself on Sunday morning.

What decides a Bathurst winner

Co-driver quality. Look at who is sharing the car, not just who owns the seat. Teams that pair a proven enduro specialist with a fast primary driver win this race.

Safety-car luck. Bathurst almost always has multiple interruptions, and a car that pits immediately before a caution can lose a lap of track position through nothing it did wrong. This is the single biggest source of variance in the race.
