|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| USA | 3 | 2 | 0 | 1 | 8 | 4 | 6 |

Australia finished second on goal difference ahead of Paraguay, who also went through as one of the best third-placed teams. The Egypt defeat was Australia’s third World Cup knockout loss after 2006 and 2022, so the wait for a first knockout win goes on.
Socceroos World Cup Lineup: Who Played
Five players started all four matches: Patrick Beach, Alessandro Circati, Harry Souttar, Aiden O’Neill and Jordan Bos. Connor Metcalfe and Nestory Irankunda started three each.
Irankunda opened the scoring against Türkiye, and Lucas Herrington became the youngest Australian to play at a World Cup when he featured against Paraguay aged 18.
Injuries cost the squad two players mid-tournament. Mathew Leckie (hamstring, against the USA) and Jacob Italiano (groin, in training) were ruled out and left camp on 27 June. No replacements were called up, so Australia finished the tournament with 24 players.
Ryan’s only appearance came off the bench in the 119th minute against Egypt, just before the shootout. In the shootout, Jackson Irvine and Awer Mabil scored, while Souttar missed and Herrington hit the bar.
Predicted Socceroos Squad vs the Real Squad
Before the squad was named, we published a predicted Socceroos World Cup squad on this page. We got 17 of the 26 right.
| Result | Players |
|---|---|
| Correct picks (17) | Ryan, Izzo, Circati, Burgess, Geria, Italiano, Bos, Herrington, Behich, Irvine, O’Neill, Metcalfe, Devlin, Irankunda, Velupillay, Mabil, Yengi |
| Selected, but not in our prediction (9) | Beach, Degenek, Trewin, Souttar, Okon-Engstler, Leckie, Touré, Hrustic, Volpato |
| In our prediction, but not selected (9) | Gauci, Rowles, McGree, Teague, Baccus, Juric, Boyle, Duke, Goodwin |
The biggest miss was in goal. We predicted Mat Ryan as the starting goalkeeper, but Beach started all four matches. We also left out Souttar, who ended up captaining the side.
What Next for the Socceroos
Since the World Cup, Australia drew 1-1 with Brazil in Townsville on 25 September, through an Irankunda free kick, and lost 4-2 to Brazil at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on 29 September, with Circati and Metcalfe scoring. Popovic left Ryan out of that squad but said his international career is not over. Mitch Duke, who was not part of the World Cup squad, has retired from international football.
