What this series is actually for
These are friendlies, and the framing matters before you bet them. Australia have just come out of a World Cup and this is the start of the next cycle rather than the end of the last one. Tony Popovic put the intent plainly, saying the side wants to “consistently test ourselves against top-tier opposition moving forward”. Brazil is about as literal a version of that as the calendar allows.
The practical read for punters is that both squads will treat these as auditions. Friendlies against touring giants tend to produce more substitutions, more experimentation and less tactical caution than a competitive fixture, which pushes value towards goals and handicap markets rather than the head-to-head. Two games four days apart in Townsville and Brisbane also means rotation is near certain, particularly for Brazil, who are travelling a long way for a short window.
Socceroos squad news
Tony Popovic has used his first squad since the World Cup to start turning the side over, and the headline is who is missing. Mat Ryan, the captain, has been left out. Popovic has been explicit that this is not the end of Ryan’s international career, but the most-capped goalkeeper in Australian history watching a Brazil doubleheader from home is the clearest signal yet that the next cycle has started.
Five other members of the World Cup squad have also been moved on: Cammy Devlin, Ajdin Hrustic, Mat Leckie, Awer Mabil and Kai Trewin. Nishan Velupillay was initially left out as well, but is now back in the squad as a replacement (see below).
In their place come seven uncapped players: Kasey Bos, Eli Adams, Kealey Adamson, Jacob Chapman, Yaya Dukuly, Dylan Leonard and Marcus Younis. Riley McGree and Patrick Yazbek return after injury.
Unavailable: Jordan Bos, Cameron Burgess and Cristian Volpato are all out injured, and all three would have been likely selections if fit. Mohamed Toure and Alexander Robertson were named but have withdrawn for medical reasons, and Nishan Velupillay (FC Ingolstadt), a World Cup squad member, has been called up to replace them.
What it means for betting. This is the single most important thing to know before pricing either game. A squad with seven uncapped players in it, missing its captain and three likely first-choice picks, is not the team that played at the World Cup, and any market built on Australia’s tournament form is pricing a side that no longer exists. It also makes player props close to unbettable across the two games: debutants get minutes in friendlies, rotation between Townsville and Brisbane will be heavy, and a starting eleven on Friday tells you little about Tuesday. Team and margin markets are the defensible plays here.
Brazil’s squad
Carlo Ancelotti named a 26-man squad for the two games, headlined by Vinícius Júnior of Real Madrid, Raphinha of Barcelona, Marquinhos of Paris Saint-Germain, Estêvão of Chelsea, and Arsenal’s Bruno Guimarães and Gabriel Magalhães. Endrick is also included.
Two players have since pulled out. Chelsea striker João Pedro withdrew with a knee injury and was replaced by Fluminense midfielder Matheus Martinelli, and Roma right-back Wesley went home with a thigh strain, with Vanderson called up in his place. João Pedro was the obvious centre-forward in the group, so Brazil will reshuffle up front, with Raphinha, who has played through the middle for Barcelona, the likeliest option. It is still a strong travelling squad for a pair of friendlies, and Brazil play India in October after this trip.
Where Australia are coming from
The Socceroos reached the round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup, finishing second in Group D, a group containing hosts the United States, Turkiye and Paraguay, on four points. Their tournament ended against Egypt in Dallas on 3 July, a 1-1 draw settled 4-2 on penalties, the first World Cup shootout Australia have been involved in. Getting out of that group was the achievement; the shootout was the kind of ending that tells you very little about the team.

The Brazil question
Brazil are five-time world champions and by some distance the best side Australia will face at home this year. That is the whole point of the exercise, and it also sets the betting shape: on class, Brazil should be short in both matches. The question is not who is better but how much of their best they bring to a two-game trip to Queensland in September, and how Australia set up when they are clearly second favourite at home.
Australia’s record against the very top tier has generally been about containment rather than ambition. A home crowd in Townsville for a fixture that city rarely gets, then a full Suncorp, gives the Socceroos an atmosphere they do not often enjoy against opposition of this level.
Socceroos vs Brazil betting markets
Head-to-head with the draw, Asian handicap, total goals over/under, both teams to score and first goalscorer are all framed for both games. Two markets are worth more attention than the head-to-head:
- Handicap. If Brazil are short enough that the head-to-head is unbackable, the line is where the actual opinion lives. Whether Australia can stay within a goal is a more interesting question than whether they can win.
- Total goals. Friendlies with heavy rotation and a second-half full of substitutes are structurally different from competitive internationals. Look at the totals on both games, and treat game two differently to game one.

Game 1 result: Australia 1-1 Brazil
Australia took the game to Brazil in front of a sell-out crowd in Townsville and were level at half-time. Brazil thought they had scored straight after the break, but Estêvão’s goal was ruled out by VAR for an earlier foul on Harry Souttar. Irankunda then put Australia in front in the 68th minute, driving a free kick over the wall and past Hugo Souza, and the Socceroos held on until the 95th minute, when substitute Rayan headed in Raphinha’s corner. A win would have been only Australia’s second ever over Brazil.
How our read went. We had Brazil to win game one but said this was the game to take Australia on the handicap, and it played out that way: a touring side short of its best in its first game, and a Socceroos side that stayed in the contest for all 95 minutes. For game two the case for a better Brazil in Brisbane still stands, but Australia have shown they can stay close, so the handicap remains more interesting than the head-to-head.
Game 2 result: Brazil 4-2 Australia
Tony Popovic named an unchanged side, and Brazil scored inside three minutes through Vanderson. Australia hit back twice in the first half, Alessandro Circati and Connor Metcalfe putting them 2-1 up, but Raphinha levelled from the penalty spot in first-half stoppage time. Bruno Guimarães restored Brazil’s lead midway through the second half and Vinícius Júnior converted a second penalty late on. A touchline clash between Endrick and Harry Souttar earned both a yellow card. The crowd of 52,423 was a record for football at Suncorp Stadium.
How our read went. We said game two was the one to take Brazil, and they won it. The handicap angle that worked in Townsville did not repeat: Brazil won by two, so Australia did not stay within a goal this time. Across the series the Socceroos drew one, lost one and scored three goals against Brazil in 180 minutes, which is a fair return for a squad carrying seven uncapped players.
Socceroos vs Brazil prediction
Game 1, Townsville: Brazil to win, but this is the game to consider Australia on the handicap. First fixture of a tour, long trip behind them, a hostile and unfamiliar venue, and a Socceroos side with something to prove in front of a crowd that will treat it like a final. Touring sides are routinely at their least sharp in game one.
Game 2, Brisbane: Brazil more comfortably. Four days of acclimatisation, a bigger stage at Suncorp and a clearer idea of what Australia offer should mean a better Brazil performance, even through rotation. If you are taking Brazil anywhere in this series, take them here.
