What Is a Mystery Bet?
A mystery bet is an exotic racing bet where the bookmaker’s computer selects the runners at random instead of you choosing them. You pick the race, the bet type and your stake; the system does the rest. You won’t see which runners you’ve drawn until the bet is confirmed — that’s the “mystery” part.
Mystery bets sit on the tote (pari-mutuel) and exotic markets rather than fixed-odds head-to-head betting. The most common version by far is the mystery trifecta — a randomly generated trifecta — but most operators also let you take a mystery first 4, quinella, exacta or quaddie. Because the selections are random, two punters taking a $5 mystery trifecta on the same race will usually end up with completely different runners.
How Does a Mystery Bet Work?
Placing a mystery bet comes down to three choices:
- Pick the race — any thoroughbred, harness or greyhound race the bookmaker offers mystery betting on.
- Pick the bet type — trifecta, first 4, quinella, exacta or quaddie. This decides how many runners the computer assigns and how they have to finish.
- Set your stake — usually from $1, taken either as a boxed bet or a flexi bet (more on cost below).
Once you confirm, the computer reveals your randomly drawn runners and the bet is locked in. From there it settles exactly like a normal exotic — a mystery trifecta pays out if your three drawn runners fill the first three placings in any order.
Mystery Bet Types
The bet type you choose sets what has to happen for the bet to win. These are the exotics you can usually take as a mystery:

How Much Does a Mystery Bet Cost?
Mystery bets start from as little as $1, and the price works the same way as any boxed exotic — through flexi betting. A boxed trifecta has to cover every possible 1-2-3 combination of its runners, so the full $1 cost climbs quickly as the field grows:

Flexi betting lets you take the bet for a set budget instead of the full price. Your flexi percentage is simply your stake divided by the full $1 cost. Take a 4-runner boxed trifecta that costs $24 at $1: bet $6 as a flexi and you’re on at $6 Ă· $24 = 25%. If that trifecta pays a $1,000 dividend, you collect 25% — $250. The same logic applies to a mystery bet: you set the spend, and the flexi percentage decides what share of the dividend you collect.
How to Place a Mystery Bet
The exact spot varies by bookmaker, but the flow is always the same:
- Open the race you want to bet on.
- Choose your exotic bet type — trifecta, first 4, quinella, exacta or quaddie.
- Select the mystery option and how many selections you want.
- Set your stake, as a boxed bet or a flexi percentage.
