Our Australia v England T20 tips

We could not get dated prices from our bookmakers when this preview was published on Wednesday 4 November, so these tips carry no price. Check the market before you bet.

Market Our tip Why
Series winner England T20 World Cup semi-finalists and 3-0 winners over Sri Lanka in September, with most of their first-choice batters.
Top England batter (series) Harry Brook Made 114 not out off 49 balls against Sri Lanka in September and was player of that series.
Top Australia batter (series) Mitchell Marsh Captain and opener in a side without Head and Inglis, so he should face the most balls.

Why we are against Australia, at home. Australia went out of the T20 World Cup in the group stage in February, losing to Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka. For this series they are also without Travis Head, Josh Inglis and Cameron Green, who are rested after the ODIs, and without Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood. England have Phil Salt, Brook, Will Jacks, Jacob Bethell and Sam Curran. The risk to our tip is that five games give the home side plenty of chances, and young Australian batters such as Jake Fraser-McGurk and Mitch Owen can win a game on their own.

Squads

Australia (14): Mitchell Marsh (captain), Xavier Bartlett, Mahli Beardman, Nikhil Chaudhary, Tim David, Joel Davies, Jack Edwards, Nathan Ellis, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Sam Harper, Spencer Johnson, Mitch Owen, Lachlan Shaw, Adam Zampa.

Nathan Ellis returns from the side strain that kept him out of the ODIs. Fraser-McGurk and Owen are back in the T20 side, and Harper and Shaw are uncapped. Matt Short is out of both squads after a hip procedure.

England (16): Harry Brook (captain), Tom Banton, Jacob Bethell, James Coles, Jordan Cox, Henry Crocombe, Sam Curran, Liam Dawson, Aneurin Donald, Eddie Jack, Will Jacks, Jamie Overton, Adil Rashid, Thomas Rew, Phil Salt, Luke Wood.

Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Sonny Baker and Josh Tongue play the ODIs but are not in the T20 squad, as England manage their fast bowlers before a Test tour of South Africa. Jos Buttler (hamstring surgery) and Saqib Mahmood (knee) are injured. Thomas Rew, 18, and Eddie Jack are new to the squad.

Form and head to head

Australia were knocked out of the T20 World Cup in the group stage in February, their first group-stage exit since 2009, after defeats by Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka. They have played one T20I series since, a 3-0 win in Bangladesh in June.

England reached the T20 World Cup semi-finals, losing to India by seven runs in Mumbai, then beat Sri Lanka 3-0 at home in September. Brook was player of that series.

Recent meetings: the last T20I series between the sides, in England in September 2024, finished 1-1. Australia won by 28 runs in Southampton, England won by three wickets in Cardiff, and the third game at Old Trafford was washed out.

Venues and conditions

The MCG and the Gabba are big grounds where hitting into the gaps matters as much as clearing the rope. The SCG usually gives the spinners some help, which brings Adam Zampa and Adil Rashid into play. Manuka Oval has short boundaries and tends to produce high scores. All five are night games, so dew can make bowling second harder. Check the toss before betting on match totals.

Betting angles

Wait for the teams. With 14 and 16 players in the squads and five games in 12 days, both sides will rotate. Check the line-ups at the toss before backing player markets.

Top-batter markets favour the openers. Marsh and Fraser-McGurk for Australia, and Salt and Banton or Brook for England, face the most balls. Bowling markets are harder to call because both sides will change their attacks.

One loss does not end the series. If Australia win the first game at the MCG, England have four more chances. Compare prices at our best cricket betting sites before you bet.

How to watch in Australia

Men’s T20Is are not on free-to-air TV. Every match of the series is live on Fox Cricket (Foxtel) and streams on Kayo. Seven and 7plus do not show men’s white-ball internationals under Cricket Australia’s current broadcast deal.
