Wyndham Clark has won the second playoff event of the season, closing with an even-par 70 for 17 under (263) and a three-shot win over Patrick Cantlay at Bellerive Country Club. Rory McIlroy finished solo third, one behind Cantlay, having spent most of the weekend as the man most likely to catch Clark.

It is Clark’s third PGA Tour title of the season and worth $3.6 million from a $20 million purse, along with 750 FedExCup points and a two-place rise to third in the standings. How Clark won it

He led by five after 54 holes and did not need to do anything spectacular on Sunday. An even-par 70 was enough because nobody behind him put a low number together, and a five-shot cushion turned into a three-shot win rather than a collapse. Bellerive rewarded control off the tee all week and Clark had more of it than anyone.

The 17-under total is the same number Scottie Scheffler posted to win the St Jude a week earlier, which is a neat symmetry for two very different weeks: Scheffler won by eight, Clark by three.

Cantlay’s weekend was worth more than second place

Patrick Cantlay arrived at Bellerive 43rd in the FedExCup and needing a big week simply to reach East Lake. Solo second moved him up 24 places to 19th and into the top 30. Gary Woodland (31st before the week, tied fourth here) and Robert MacIntyre (36th, tied seventh) did the same thing, climbing to 18th and 25th.

Three players in, three out: Kurt Kitayama, Rickie Fowler and Bud Cauley all dropped outside the number and their seasons are over.

All three Australasians made East Lake

The best possible outcome for an Australian and New Zealand audience. Min Woo Lee (21st), Adam Scott (28th) and Ryan Fox (30th) all qualified for the Tour Championship, with Fox the last man into the field. Fox arrived as the reigning Open champion and has already made his mark at East Lake, eagling the third in the first round.
