How McIlroy Won the 2026 Masters
This was a Masters for the ages. McIlroy’s journey across four rounds was a rollercoaster that will be talked about for decades.
- Round 1 (67, -5): Shared the lead with Sam Burns, Kurt Kitayama and Australia’s Jason Day.
- Round 2 (65, -12): Fired six birdies in his final seven holes for a record six-shot lead ā the largest 36-hole advantage in Masters history.
- Round 3 (73, -11): The wheels came off. A double bogey at the 11th saw the lead evaporate. Cameron Young caught him with a 65. McIlroy went from six shots clear to sharing the lead.
- Round 4 (67, -14): The defining round of his career. Justin Rose surged to the lead through the front nine with birdies at 7 and 9. But McIlroy produced one of the great back-nine performances in Masters history. At the pivotal 12th ā the heart of Amen Corner ā McIlroy waited for the perfect wind conditions before threading a nine-iron inside seven feet and converting for birdie. He followed with another birdie at 13 to go three clear. A bogey on 18 made it tight, but one shot was enough.
McIlroy’s sixth major championship ā and second consecutive Masters ā cements his place among the game’s all-time greats. He is the first back-to-back Masters champion since Tiger Woods in 2001-02, and only the fourth player in history to achieve the feat. After years of waiting for that first Augusta green jacket, he now has two.
Justin Rose ā So Close Again
Augusta’s cruelest story added another chapter. Rose led through the front nine on Sunday after an incredible shot from the trees on the 7th, but faded down the stretch to finish T3 at -12. It is his fifth top-3 finish at the Masters without winning ā four runner-up finishes and now a T3 while leading on the final day. At 45, the window may finally be closing on one of golf’s greatest nearly-men at Augusta.
