Round 3 Key Storylines

  • McIlroy’s collapse — A double bogey on the 11th was the turning point as Rory’s record six-shot lead evaporated. He shot 73 to share the lead with Cameron Young on -11. The back-to-back bid is still alive but the momentum has completely shifted.
  • Cameron Young’s charge — A brilliant 65 on Moving Day, matching Scheffler for the low round of the tournament. Young has never won a major but has multiple runner-up finishes.
  • Jason Day 🇦🇺 in contention — Day birdied all four par-5s on Saturday for a 68, moving to -8 and just three off the lead. At 40, the Australian could be in the final group mix on Sunday. Birdied four straight from 12-15.
  • Justin Rose lurking — The three-time runner-up is at -8, three back. He shot 66 in the final round last year to force a playoff with McIlroy. Could the fairytale finally happen?
  • Scheffler’s 65 — The world #1 matched the tournament’s low round on Saturday. At -8 he’s three back — a genuine threat on Sunday.

Masters 2026 Leaderboard After Round 2

Round 2 Key Storylines

  • McIlroy’s historic lead — Six birdies in his final seven holes for a 65. The 12-under total and six-shot lead are both Masters records through 36 holes. The back-to-back dream is very much alive.
  • Jason Day stays in touch — A 73 in R2 dropped Day from co-leader to T7, but at -4 he’s still within striking distance if the leaders falter. At 40, the Australian is showing he still has the game for Augusta.
  • The cut claims big names — The +4 cut saw Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm, and Akshay Bhatia miss the weekend. Cameron Smith (+7) and Min Woo Lee (+11) also fell short for Australia.
  • Justin Rose’s fairytale? — Three-time Masters runner-up Rose sits at -5, seven back. At his age, this could be his last realistic chance at a green jacket.
  • Scheffler lurking — The world #1 is at -3, nine back. A long shot but never count him out at Augusta.

Australian Tracker After Round 1

Four Australians are in the field at Augusta National this week. Here is how each of them fared in Round 1, with analysis on what it means for their tournament prospects.

Player R1 Total Notes
Jason Day 67 -5 Co-leader. Eagle on 15th.
Adam Scott 72 E Back-nine fightback; eagle on 13th.
Cameron Smith 74 +2 Needs a strong R2 to make the cut.
Min Woo Lee 78 +6 Double bogey on 13th; cut battle ahead.

Jason Day (-5, T1)

Jason Day delivered the kind of round that reminds everyone just how good he is when he is at his best. The 40-year-old from Beaudesert, Queensland, fired a six-under 67 to share the lead at Augusta, capping his round with an eagle on the par-five 15th. Day is a former major champion, having won the 2015 PGA Championship at Whistling Straits, and Sunday’s finale represents a genuine chance at a second Green Jacket. For Australian punters watching on, this is the story of the week. Day has experience at Augusta, knows how to manage the back nine under pressure, and his driving accuracy should serve him well as the tournament progresses.

Adam Scott (E, T11)

Adam Scott’s round told two very different stories. A difficult front nine left the 2013 Masters champion scrambling, but a brilliant back-nine fightback that included an eagle on the par-five 13th got him back to level par for the tournament. Scott remains well within the cut line and, given his history at Augusta, even par is a more than workable position heading into Round 2. He will be hoping for a calmer day and a round that matches the back nine he produced on Thursday.

Cameron Smith (+2, T13)

Cameron Smith finds himself two over par after Round 1, which puts him on the bubble heading into Friday’s second round. The LIV Golf star is a capable player on major-championship courses and has the game to post a low number at Augusta, but he will need a significant improvement to comfortably make the cut. A round in the 68-70 range on Saturday (AEST) would put him in a strong position to stick around for the weekend.

Min Woo Lee (+6, T15)

A tough start to the Masters for Min Woo Lee, who carded a six-over 78 in Round 1. A double bogey on the par-five 13th was the round’s defining low point, and Lee now faces a substantial challenge just to make the cut. He will need to go very low in Round 2 to stay in the field for the weekend. Augusta is unforgiving to players who struggle off the tee, and Lee will need to be much more clinical with his iron play if he is to save his tournament.

Round 1 Key Storylines

Rory McIlroy’s Back-to-Back Bid Alive

Defending champion Rory McIlroy opened with a 67, one of the best first-round scores of his Masters career. McIlroy is chasing back-to-back Green Jackets, something that has not been done since Tiger Woods won in 2001 and 2002. The Northern Irishman is playing with obvious confidence and this was a composed, controlled round from a man who knows Augusta National better than almost anyone in the field. The market still has McIlroy as one of the co-favourites heading into Round 2, and rightly so.

Jason Day, 40 Years Old and Leading a Major

The narrative does not get much better for Australian golf fans. Jason Day turned 40 this year and is co-leading the Masters after Round 1. It is the kind of story that makes major championship golf so compelling. Day’s 67 was built on smart course management, aggressive birdie-hunting on the par fives, and a clutch eagle at 15. If he can back it up over the next two days, he will be right in the mix come Sunday morning (Monday AEST).

Sam Burns’ Ball-Striking Masterclass

Sam Burns may not carry the same name recognition as some co-leaders, but his Round 1 statistics were exceptional. Burns hit 11 of 14 fairways and 16 of 18 greens in regulation, a ball-striking display that gave him a platform to make the most of Augusta’s scoring opportunities. When a player is that accurate around Augusta National, low scores tend to follow. Burns is quietly a significant threat this week.

Scottie Scheffler Lurking at Three Back

World number one Scottie Scheffler is three shots off the lead after a solid opening 69. Scheffler is the kind of player who does not need to shoot 65 in Round 1 to win a tournament, as his consistency over four rounds is what sets him apart. Three back at Augusta after Round 1 is a very manageable position for the defending world number one, and it would be foolish to write him off at any point this week.

Conditions Split the Field

Morning wave starters had a clear advantage in Round 1, with calmer conditions on Thursday making scoring easier before the wind picked up for afternoon players. McIlroy, Burns, Kitayama and Day all started in the morning window. Scheffler and several other marquee names played in tougher afternoon conditions, which goes some way to explaining the slightly higher scores from the later starters. The weather is expected to be more consistent across both waves in Round 2.

Masters 2026 Betting Update After Round 1

Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler remain the market leaders heading into Round 2, with both players well-positioned on the leaderboard and boasting the kind of Augusta pedigree that makes them perennial threats at this tournament. McIlroy, as the defending champion and co-leader, will attract plenty of support from Australian punters, while Scheffler’s consistency at major championships means he is never to be discounted from three back.

The standout move for Australian bettors is Jason Day. Co-leading a major at 40 years old, with a proven major championship pedigree and intimate knowledge of Augusta National, Day represents one of the more compelling outright plays in the market right now. His Round 1 was built on precision, not luck, and the eagle at 15 showed he is not afraid to attack when the opportunity presents itself.
