A blockbuster showdown awaits in the World Cup quarter-finals on Sunday in Warrington as Tonga and Samoa lock horns for a place in the semi-finals.

The proud Pacific Island nations both harboured ambitions of going all the way and making history for their countries at this World Cup, but after Samoa went down to England in the tournament opener, one of them will now be going home before the semi-finals.

Samoa were the team everyone was talking about pre-tournament, with eight members of the Panthers’ Grand Final winning squad lining up, but they were embarrassed in that aforementioned opener against England, conceding 60 points in the crushing loss.

Matt Parish’s side have bounced back strongly, beating minnows Greece 72-4 before a thumping 62-4 victory over a solid France side, with Panthers winger Taylan May crossing for four tries.

Meanwhile, Tonga were also shaky in their opening match, but managed to steady the ship to secure a six-point win over Papua New Guinea.

Tonga also stepped it up in their next two matches, beating Wales 32-6 before a massive 92-10 win over the Cook Islands.

With Cowboys captain Jason Taumalolo leading the charge, Tonga are hoping to set up a likely semi-final clash with England. Tonga famously conquered Australia a few years ago and the next step in their progress as a Rugby League force is to make a World Cup final.

VERDICT:

It’s a shame these two nations are meeting so early in the knockout phase as this would be a perfect semi-final showdown.

This could really go either way, which is why we’re liking Samoa’s odds of $2.50 as underdogs. Samoa have learnt their lessons from the England loss and have superior class in the halves with Jarome Luai running the show.
