How NSW Won Game 1

For 50 minutes this looked like a Queensland procession. The Maroons were sharp, physical and clinical early, racing to an 18-0 lead as debutant halfback Sam Walker pulled the strings and the forward pack rolled forward. Rob Toia, Tom Flegler and Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow all crossed as Billy Slater’s side controlled territory and completed at a high rate.

The game turned on a single moment. In the 57th minute, Queensland fullback Kalyn Ponga was sent off for a shoulder charge on Tolutau Koula, who failed his Head Injury Assessment and took no further part. Reduced to 12 men for more than 20 minutes, the Maroons could not hold on. The Blues lifted, Cleary took control of the kicking game, and tries to Hudson Young and Ethan Strange dragged NSW back into the contest before Cleary’s own four-pointer made it a one-score game.

With the clock in the red, Cleary put up a trademark kick and James Tedesco was there to score the match-winner, completing a remarkable 22-20 turnaround and sending the home crowd into raptures.

Key Moments

  • Maroons fly out of the blocks: Queensland led 18-0 with Toia, Flegler and Tabuai-Fidow all crossing as Walker dictated terms on debut.
  • The turning point (57’): Kalyn Ponga sent off for a shoulder charge on Tolutau Koula, who failed his HIA. Queensland played the final 23 minutes a man down.
  • The comeback: Young and Strange struck to halve the deficit before Cleary’s try set up a grandstand finish.
  • Tedesco’s match-winner: In the dying seconds, Tedesco finished a Cleary kick to win it 22-20.

Player Ratings & Standouts

Queensland: Sam Walker was the form player on the field, one of the better Origin debuts in memory with two try assists and a controlled kicking game. Harry Grant was relentless out of dummy-half with a huge tackle count, and Selwyn Cobbo was a metre-eating machine on the wing. The night will be remembered, though, for Kalyn Ponga’s send-off, which swung the contest.

New South Wales: captain Isaah Yeo and the forwards refused to give in once the numbers evened up, Nathan Cleary took over with ball and boot when it mattered, five-eighth Ethan Strange impressed on debut, and James Tedesco wrote the headline with the match-winner.

What It Means for the 2026 Series

New South Wales lead the series 1-0 and, with the Game 1 winner going on to take the series roughly 80% of the time, the Blues are firmly in the box seat. Queensland now face a must-win Game 2 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Wednesday 17 June, with the decider (if needed) at Suncorp Stadium on 8 July. Expect plenty of post-match debate around the Ponga send-off and how Slater reshuffles his side.
