Brisbane Roar vs Melbourne City Preview & Prediction
Fresh from securing their first A-League minor premiership, Melbourne City look to continue their sensational form when they come up against Brisbane Roar on Tuesday night in Redcliffe.
City captured the club’s first minor premiership in their 11-year history on Saturday night after edging the Mariners 1-0 in a controversial encounter at AAMI Park.
Craig Noone’s goal in the 59th minute proved the difference, although City almost conceded a late equaliser but escaped when a VAR review overturned an initial penalty handed to the Mariners in second-half injury time.
City are now undefeated in 16 of their last 17 games and have won five of their last six fixtures to be 10 points clear of Sydney FC with three games remaining.
Jamie Maclaren has been the main main for City, with the former Socceroos striker firing in 25 goals for the season – 12 more than the next best (Matt Derbyshire with 13).
Hoping to keep their positive momentum going into the finals, City next turn their attention to a Brisbane side who are in a dogfight to make the top six.
Brisbane claimed a much-needed 2-1 win over the last-placed Newcastle Jets on Friday night to lock down sixth spot and go three clear of the Phoenix, Wanderers and Glory.
However, while the Roar are on the brink of the top six, they are also within touching distance of third spot – and depending on other results, could potentially climb into third if they can upset City on Tuesday night.
Brisbane have only lost two of their last 11 games, but they don’t have a good recent record against City, losing their last three games and five of the last seven.
There’s a decent chance City could come out flat after the euphoria of winning the minor premiership, but the odds of them to continue their winning run are too good to ignore. City have been the standout side all season and won’t want to take their foot off the pedal with the finals approaching.
