Central Coast Mariners vs Macarthur FC Preview & Prediction

It may only be Round 2 of the new season, but it’s an important game for the Mariners as the reigning premiers host Macarthur in Gosford on Sunday afternoon.

Central Coast put together a dream season last term, ending with a thumping 6-1 victory over Melbourne City in the Grand Final to take home the silverware.

However, success always comes at a price and the Mariners saw many key players depart at season’s end, along with coach Nick Montgomery.

With so many fresh faces, it was always going to take time to gel and the Mariners were poor last week in their 3-0 season-opening loss on the road to Adelaide.

Meanwhile, Macarthur got off to a solid start, drawing 1-1 at home with Australia Cup finalists Brisbane, although they would have been disappointed not to take all three points after going ahead courtesy of 20-year-old winger Raphael Borges Rodriguez.

Macarthur had a hugely disappointing season last campaign after initially winning the Australia Cup, but they’ve gone unbeaten in four of their last five games in all competitions and should be confident of getting at least a point against what is looking like a vulnerable Mariners side at the moment.

VERDICT:

Can’t confidently back the Mariners after what I saw last week – they’re under a lot of pressure and it’s going to take time for their new-look squad to form combinations.

Macarthur look an improved team from last season and they actually claimed a 3-2 win over the Mariners in Gosford in that campaign.
