Melbourne City vs Macarthur FC Preview & Prediction

Melbourne City were the undisputed best team of the regular season by a country mile, but they are in danger of missing out on a Grand Final spot when they come up against Macarthur FC on Sunday.

City produced some sensational football during the regular season to comfortably finish at the top of the ladder for their first minor premiership.

However, they have been struggling over the last few weeks and have a few things going against them in this encounter.

Firstly, City have lost their home ground advantage due to the pandemic, with the game moving from AAMI Park in Melbourne to Jubilee Stadium in Sydney.

Additionally, City are still without Jamie Maclaren, who is away on Socceroos duty in the Middle East. Maclaren has been responsible for almost half of City’s goals this season and they’ve struggled in his absence, scoring just two goals in their last three games.

Speaking of, City have failed to win their last three games since beating the Mariners for the minor premiership, going down to Brisbane 3-0 and Newcastle Jets 2-1, along with drawing 1-1 with Melbourne Victory.

Drawing with the last-placed team and losing to the second-last side isn’t exactly ideal preparation going into a semi-final.

Meanwhile, Macarthur have plenty of confidence and momentum having upset Central Coast 2-0 in extra-time last week to secure their spot in the semi-finals.

It’s been a fantastic debut season in the A-League for Macarthur and they now have an excellent chance to reach the grand final against an out-of-form City outfit.

VERDICT:

We believe Macarthur are way over the odds here and are happy to back them home for another upset.

City have been poor since claiming the minor premiership, losing two of their three matches since and drawing the other, failing to beat the A-League’s two bottom-ranked teams.

Macarthur drew with a full strength City side in their last meeting in Sydney in April and we’ll be backing them for the upset on Sunday (best Macarthur win odds $5.75 with Ladbrokes).
