Melbourne City vs Sydney FC Preview & Prediction

It’s a Grand Final rematch as Melbourne City and Sydney FC collide for the premiership for the second consecutive season on Sunday at AAMI Park.

Sydney denied City a first A-League premiership in last season’s showpiece, with Rhyan Grant popping up in extra-time to hand the Sky Blues the silverware.

The Sky Blues have won the A-League grand final on five separate occasions and will be looking to become the first team to win three straight titles on Sunday night.

Steve Corica’s side had been solid without being spectacular for most of the regular season, but they are peaking when it matters most.

Timing is everything and Sydney have all the momentum heading into the premiership decider, winning their last six matches on the bounce.

Despite missing several key figures on international duty, Sydney’s defence has remained rock solid, with the side leaking just two goals in those six victories.

While their defence is strong, Sydney have been firing in attack courtesy of veteran strikers Bobo and Adam Le Fondre, who combined to score both of the team’s goals in their 2-1 win over Adelaide in last week’s semi-finals.

Bobo has scored eight goals in his last 11 matches and is a genuine match-winner, while Le Fondre has swiftly slot back into the Sydney fold after spending most of the season overseas.

Meanwhile, City have been stumbling since securing the minor premiership last month, but they got back to winning ways last week with a 2-0 dispatch of Macarthur in the semis.

City have had to look elsewhere for goals in the absence of Jamie Maclaren and it was youngsters Stefan Colakovski and Marco Tilo who stepped up to propel their side into the grand final against Macarthur.

However, City haven’t been convincing at all and were fortunate not to go behind in the opening half after Macarthur squandered several chances in front of goal

City were winless in three before that victory, losing to the lowly Newcastle Jets, while they also drew with last-placed Melbourne Victory and went down to Brisbane Roar.

VERDICT:

City are favourites with the bookies, but that can’t be justified in our eyes.

City might have the home ground advantage, but Sydney are the form team in the competition and have won six straight matches, conceding just twice in that span.

Sydney also have the experience of winning grand finals, including the last two, while Maclaren’s absence for City is massive – the striker scored almost half of the club’s goals during the regular season.

City are under big pressure to deliver a maiden A-League premiership and their youngsters are inexperience at this level.

We can expect a low-scoring game with three of the last four meetings between the sides seeing under 2.5 goals, but Sydney have been here before and have the form on the board with the experienced Bobo and Le Fondre firing up front – we’ll be backing the Sky Blues to make it three consecutive premierships on Sunday night (Best Sydney FC win odds $2.90 with Ladbrokes).
