Sydney FC vs Melbourne City Preview & Prediction
Melbourne City go in search of back-to-back victories over reigning premiers Sydney FC when the two sides clash at Leichhardt Oval on Saturday.
City went winless in four of their six matches to start the season, but their showdown with Sydney in February kick-started their campaign – and they haven’t looked back since.
City avenged their Grand Final loss by beating the Sky Blues 3-2 on that night and proceeded to go on a six-match winning streak, prevailing to nil in four of those triumphs and scoring a total of 20 goals during that period.
Their streak came to an end at the hands of Western United, with City going down 2-1 despite dominating large patches of the game. City made an immediate return to the winners circle, edging Wellington 3-2 in their last outing.
Jamie Maclaren has been sensational over the last couple of months, scoring 13 goals for the season as he aims for another golden boot.
Meanwhile, Sydney have yet to reach the peak of their powers this season, but they are doing what they need to do and are still proving very hard to beat.
Steve Corica’s side come into this clash after back-to-back wins over Melbourne Victory (3-0) and Perth Glory mid-week (1-0).
Sydney’s games are proving to be low-scoring, with six of their last eight seeing under 2.5 goals. That’s in complete contrast to City, who have seen over 2.5 goals in five of their last six.
It sets up an intriguing encounter for Saturday night. City have been on fire, but they haven’t been their dominant selves in their last two fixtures. Sydney meanwhile continue to be solid without being spectacular.
As a result, I can see these two juggernaut sides cancelling each other out in a low-scoring draw.
