Melbourne Victory vs Melbourne City Preview & Prediction

Minor premiers Melbourne City look to bring some winning momentum into the finals series when they face bitter rivals Melbourne Victory on Sunday afternoon at AAMI Park.

It’s been an outstanding season for City, with the team winning 15 of their 24 matches and scoring a competition high 55 goals in the process – 10 more than the next best side.

Jamie Maclaren was the main man for City, with the striker scoring almost half of those goals, but the club will have to win the premiership with some else leading the line due to the No. 9 being away on Socceroos duty.

City secured their first minor premiership with a win over the Mariners a fortnight ago and subsequently rested a bunch of players for a 3-0 loss away to Brisbane. Their scheduled game against the Jets was then postponed.

Meanwhile, Victory will be playing their last game of a nightmare season that could still see them pick up the wooden spoon.

Victory have won just five of their 25 games this campaign and head into this clash just one point off the last-placed Jets. If Newcastle win or draw against Perth and Victory lose this game, then they will finish last.

The good news for Victory is that they should have some confidence following a last-start 6-1 drubbing of Western United.

VERDICT:

However, the bad news for Victory is that they’ve lost both games against City this season by a combined score of 13-0. It doesn’t get much worse than that.

City will be without Maclaren, so we shouldn’t expect another demolition job, but they won’t want to lose any momentum ahead of the finals, so we’re still going to back a win for the minor premiers (City win best odds of $1.80 with Sportsbet).
