Melbourne Victory vs Newcastle Jets Preview & Prediction

Victory will be confident of taking a maximum six points from their first two games of the season when they welcome the Jets to AAMI Park on Sunday.

After another tough season last term, Tony Popovic knows the importance of a bright start as his Victory outfit aim to return to the finals.

Victory couldn’t have asked for a better start, toppling rivals Sydney FC 2-0 in the Big Blue last week. Veteran striker Bruno Fornaroli put Victory in front before new French recruit Zinedine Machach doubled the lead late into the second half.

However, Victory can’t get too carried away with that result – they also beat Sydney on the road to open last season and faded badly.

Meanwhile, the Jets earned a share of the spoils on the road against Perth in their opener, with Apostolos Stamatelopoulos’ header in injury time resulting in a 2-2 draw.

Earlier, Kosta Grozos scored what was arguably the goal of the weekend to get the Jets back level, but two howlers in defence that led to Perth goals ultimately cost the Jets all three points.

It was a solid A-League debut for coach Rob Stanton, but he has a lot of work to do in order for the Jets to challenge for a top six spot this season.

VERDICT:

Victory looked in promising form last week and this is the perfect opportunity to start building some early season momentum, taking on one of the weakest teams at home.

The Jets didn’t offer much last week and were poor at the back. Victory beat Newcastle 4-0 at AAMI Park last season and another comfortable win should be on the cards for the hosts (Best Victory win H2H odds $1.72 with bet365.)
