Newcastle Jets vs Melbourne Victory Preview & Prediction

It’s a huge game for the Newcastle Jets as they attempt to stay in the finals hunt when they entertain Melbourne Victory at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday night.

There’s certainly no love lost between these two teams, with Victory winning a controversial Grand Final back in 2018 and the Jets prevailing 2-1 in their last meeting that saw former Newcastle player Josh Brilliante sent off.

Newcastle have been one of the most entertaining teams to watch in the competition this season, which is highlighted by their 36 goals, which is second only to reigning premiers Melbourne City.

Beka Mikeltadze has been a revelation, with the Georgian striker trailing only Jamie Maclaren in the Golden Boot standings with 12 goals from his 14 games, while Brazilian playmaker Daniel Penha has also chipped in with four goals and a whopping 10 assists.

Currently in ninth spot, the Jets trail sixth-placed Sydney FC by six points, but they have four games in hand. With the Mariners and Macarthur also chasing what looks to be one finals spot remaining, Newcastle must keep winning to stay in the running.

Meanwhile, Victory appear to have wrapped up a finals spot, with Tony Popovic doing a great job after the club finished last season with the wooden spoon.

Victory are sitting pretty in third spot on the ladder, six points clear of seventh-placed Macarthur. They are unbeaten in 10 consecutive A-League games and won three of their last four – although they would have been disappointed with a 0-0 stalemate at home against the lowly Brisbane Roar in their last outing.

VERDICT:

It’s shaping as an entertaining showdown in the Hunter, with the Jets needing to win in order to keep pace with the top six.

Newcastle are coming off a thumping 6-1 crushing of Perth Glory in their last match and have toppled Victory in two of the last three meetings between the teams. With slightly more to play for and in good form, we like the Jets as home underdogs here (Best Jets win H2H odds $3.00 with bet365.)
