Newcastle Jets vs Wellington Phoenix Preview & Prediction
Newcastle and Wellington square off for the second time this season and the Jets have fond memories of the last time they met back in January.
Indeed, the Jets haven’t tasted defeat since conquering the Phoenix by a 2-1 scoreline in Wollongong on January 24. Valentino Yuel and Roy O’Donovan put Newcastle ahead before Ulises Davila fired home a consolation penalty with five minutes remaining.
Newcastle had gone into that match on a four-game losing run to start the season, but that fixture has proven to be a turning point in their season, with Craig Deans’ troops now unbeaten in their last five to surge into the top six.
Of course, it must be said that the Jets have played more games than all the teams below them, but it’s still been a fantastic period for the club nonetheless. After beating Melbourne Victory 1-0 last week, the Jets will now be chasing back-to-back wins for the first time this season on Sunday.
Meanwhile, it’s been a rough start to the season for Wellington, with the club winning just one of their eight matches to languish in last spot on the ladder.
It was always going to be a difficult challenge for the Phoenix to relocate to Wollongong for the season and they are understandably finding the going tough.
Wellington come into this clash on the back of a 2-0 defeat to fellow battlers Melbourne Victory, which isn’t a great sign for their chances here.
Newcastle aren’t playing an attractive brand of football, but they are getting the job done with minimal fuss. I can see another low-scoring game involving the Jets on Sunday, but the home team are well positioned to do the double over their Kiwi rivals.
